Abstract: Optically active carboxylic acids I where R1 is an organic radical which is linked to the asymmetric C' atom via a carbon atom and R2 is one of the radicals R1 (but not the same radical), halogen or an organic radical which is bonded to the asymmetric C' atom via an oxygen atom, are prepared by reacting a ketene II II with an alcohol in a homogeneous liquid phase in the presence of a tertiary amine III and then converting the resulting ester into the acid, using an optically active alcohol IV.

Abstract: Mixtures containing (a) polyisocyanates (A) with isocyanurate and/or biuret units, derived from aliphatic or cycloaliphatic di-isocyanates (C) and (b) other polyisocyanates (B) with allophanate and/or urethane units, derived from (b1) di-isocyanates (C) as above and (b2) polyhydric aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohols (alcohols A'), with a mol ratio of (A):(B) = (200:1)-(5:1). Independent claims are also included for (i) a method for the production of these mixtures by reacting (C) with (A') in a mol ratio of (200:1)-(5:1), optionally in presence of catalysts for the formation of allophanates and urethanes, optionally deactivating the catalyst, optionally removing unreacted (C) and then mixing the resulting (B) with (A) in the above ratio; (ii) an alternative method in which (A) contains mainly isocyanurate units, involving the reaction of (C) with (A') as above, optionally in presence of catalysts for the formation of isocyanurates, allophanates and urethanes; (iii) an alternative method in which (A) contains mainly biuret unit, involving the reaction of (C), (A') and a biuretising agent (D) in mol ratios of (C):(A') = (200:1)-(5:1) and (C):(D) = (200:1)-(5:1), optionally in presence of catalysts for the formation of biurets, allophanates and urethanes; (iv) two-component coating materials containing a polyisocyanate mixture as above and an isocyanate-reactive component; (v) a method for coating objects by mixing the two components (see iv above) and coating the resulting mixture onto the substrate within 12 hours; (vi) coated objects obtained by this method.

The resulting polyether polyol mixtures are suitable for the preparation of rigid polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, and urethane group-containing polyisocyanuate foams produced by means of the polyisocyanate polyaddition process.
