    Abstract: Bead-formed expandable styrene polymers are obtained by suspension polymerisation of styrene with addition of from 1 to 10% by weight of C3- to C7-hydrocarbons and/or carbon dioxide as blowing agent and optionally conventional additives, where the suspension stabiliser used is a mixture of magnesium pyrophosphate, a sulphonate group-containing extender and an alkali or alkaline-earth metal carboxylate, magnesium pyrophosphate being prepared directly before the polymerisation by combining an aqueous solution with an alkali metal pyrophosphate with at least the stoichiometrically necessary amount of a magnesium salt.

    Abstract: The invention concerns water-absorbent cross-linked polymers in foam form which are obtained by: (I) foaming a polymerizable aqueous mixture which comprises: (a) monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which contain acid groups and are neutralized to at least 50 mol %; (b) optionally other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers; (c) cross-linking agents; (d) initiators; (e) between 0.1 and 20 wt % of at least one surfactant; (f) optionally at least one solubilizer; and (g) optionally thickening agents, foam stabilizers, polymerization regulators, fillers and/or cell nucleating agents; foaming occurring by dispersing fine bubbles of a gas which is inert with respect to radicals; and (II) polymerizing the foamed mixture, forming a foam-form hydrogel and optionally adjusting the water content of the foam-form polymer to between 1 and 60 wt %. The invention further concerns a process for preparing these polymers and their use in sanitary articles which are used to absorb body fluids, and in bandaging material for covering wounds.

    Abstract: The invention relates to an expandable styrene polymer, comprising (a) a styrene polymer, (b) from 1 to 10% by weight, based on (a), of a blowing agent or blowing agent mixture, (c) from 0.02 to 0.25% by weight, based on (a), of a first coating containing a coating composition comprising (c1) a bisamide made from a C2-C8-alkylenediamine and an aliphatic C6-C20-carboxylic acid and (c2) a conventional antistatic, in a (c1):(C2) weight ratio of from 1 to 50, and, if desired, further coating compositions or coating composition mixtures and conventional additives in effective amounts, and to a process for the preparation of screen fractions of bead-form, expandable styrene polymers prepared by suspension polymerization.
