Abstract: Water-absorbing, expanded, crosslinked polymers obtainable by(I) foaming a polymerizable aqueous mixture which comprises(a) monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which contain acidic groups and are optionally neutralized,(b) optionally other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers,(c) crosslinkers,(d) initiators,(e) 0.1-20% by weight of at least one surfactant,(f) optionally at least one solubilizer and(g) optionally thickeners, foam stabilizers, polymerization regulators, fillers and/or cell nucleating agents,where the foaming takes place by dissolving a gas which is inert to free radicals under a pressure of 2-400 bar in the polymerizable aqueous mixture, and then decompressing the latter to atmospheric pressure, and(II) polymerizing the foamed mixture to form an expanded hydrogel and, where appropriate, adjusting the water content of the expanded polymer to 1-60% by weight, process for preparing the water-absorbing, expanded, crosslinked polymers and use of these polymers in sanitary articles employed for absorbing body fluids, in dressing material for covering wounds, as sealing material, as soil improver, as soil substitute and as packaging material.

Abstract: Polímeros reticulados, en forma de espuma y absorbentes del agua, que se obtienen por (I) espumado de una mezcla acuosa polimerizable, que contiene (a) monómeros monoetilénicamente insaturados, que contienen grupos ácido, que están neutralizadas, (b) en caso dado, otro monómero monoetilénicamente insaturado, (c) reticulantes, (d) iniciadores, (e) de un 0, 1 hasta un 20 % en peso de al menos un tensioactivo, (f) en caso dado, al menos un solubilizante, y (g) en caso dado, espesantes, estabilizantes des espumado, reguladores de la polimerización, cargas y/o formadores de gérmenes celulares, llevándose a cabo es espumado mediante dispersión de burbujas finas de un gas inerte en presencia de radicales en la mezcla acuosa polimerizable, y (II) polimerizado de la mezcla espumada con formación de un hidrogel en forma de espuma y, en caso dado, ajuste del contenido de agua del polímero de un 1 hasta un 60 % en peso, caracterizado porque al menos un 20 % en mol de los monómeros (A), que contienen grupos ácido se neutralizan con alcanolaminas terciarias y/o que los grupos ácido libres del hidrogel en forma de espuma se neutralizaran después de la polimerización a un 20 % en mol con al menos una alcanolamina.
