Abstract: A process for producing shell catalysts, for example, for gas phase oxidations in organic chemistry from an inert support and a shell of catalyst material encompassing said support, is described. A suspension of the starting material for the shell is sprayed on a moving charge of the support while partially withdrawing the dispersing material, whereupon the crude material is dried and tempered. For this purpose the support charge is mechanically moved by a gas stream injected from below while it is loosened. The catalyst prestage containing a binder and, when required, an expanding agent is sprayed on the charge in increasing amounts from above while the ratio of dispersing agent sprayed on to dispersing agent withdrawn remains constant. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the prestage as a dry powder must not vary from that of the support by more than 15%. The applied shell is consolidated by continuing the mechanical and fluidizing mixing motion. The material is then dried in the gas, which continues to flow, and tempered, when required, after decomposing any added expanding agent.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing coated catalysts, inter alia, for gas phase oxidations in organic chemistry, comprised of an inert support and a coating of catalyst material enclosing this support, wherein a suspension of the starting material for the coating is sprayed onto an agitated bed of the support, while the suspending medium is being partially removed by a gas stream, and the raw material is then dried and heat-treated. For this purpose, the support bed is mechanically agitated and loosened by a gas stream blown in from below. The catalyst precursor containing a binder and, if appropriate, a pore-former is sprayed in an increasing amount from above onto the bed, the ratio between suspending medium sprayed on and drawn off remaining about constant. The thermal expansion coefficient of the precursor as a dry powder must not deviate by more than 15% from that of the support. The applied coating is densified by continuing the mechanical and fluidizing mixing motion, the material is then dried in a continuing gas stream and heat-treated, if appropriate after decomposition of an added pore-former.

Abstract: In a process for manufacturing gas-tight aluminium tubes suitable for carrying out catalytic high-temperature reactions, powdered aluminium oxide is mixed with water, a binder and a plasticizer, and the mixture is deformed by drawing a hank into a cylindrical green body, which is then deformed in at least two places so that the circular cross-section of the tube becomes approximately ellipsoidal. The deformed green body is dried and sintered at 1740C. Excellent mixing of the gas in the tube is achieved as a result of the constrictions in the cross-section.
