Abstract: Hydroxyl-containing polyurethanes I are composed essentially of a) a diisocyanate of 6 to 30 carbon atoms (component II), b) a component III comprising alpha ) an aliphatic diol of 2 to 20 carbon atoms or beta ) an aromatic-aliphatic or aromatic-cycloaliphatic diol of 8 to 30 carbon atoms having nonphenolic hydroxyl groups as hydroxyl groups of the diol and c) a polyhydric alcohol having at least 3 hydroxyl groups, 3 to 18 carbon atoms and nonphenolic hydroxyl groups as hydroxyl groups of the alcohol (component IV), the amounts of components II to IV being such that the total number of nonphenolic hydroxyl groups is from 1.1 to 5.0 per isocyanate group of II. The polyurethanes can be used as binders or binder components for pigment-containing coatings, in particular for the production of magnetic recording materials.

Abstract: Thermoplastic polyurethane (I) with a molecular weight of 15000-70000, which contains acid groups, is soluble in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and is free from isocyanate (NCO) groups, comprises: (A) 1 mole polyol with a molecular weight of 400-4000, (B) 0.3-9 mole mixture of (B1) optionally a 2-18 carbon (C) diol and (B2) 0.03-0.4 mole diol containing acid group(s), (C) 0-1 mole 3-18 C polyol with NOTLESS 3 hydroxyl (OH) groups, (D) 1.25-13 mole 6-30 C diisocyanate and (E) 0-1 mole primary or secondary 2-16 C amino-alcohol. The molar ratio of OH and optionally NH groups in the sum of components A, B, C and E to NCO groups in D is 0.98-1.4. (I) is obtained by reacting these components in the melt. Also claimed are: (i) the preparation of (I) in this way; and (ii) magnetic recording media with a magnetic layer containing (I).

Abstract: Digital recording procedures wherein the recording support is not exposed to an obliterating magnetic field before recording are known in recent times. Such recording supports must therefore have good rewrite capability. It has been found that said requirement is fulfilled by two-layered recording supports, wherein the top layer contains a metal or metal alloy powder and has a density of less than 0.3 mu m and wherein the bottom layer contains a magnetic pigment. The coercitive force of the bottom layer has at the most two thirds the coercitive force of the top layer and the remanent magnetization of the bottom layer is at least 32 kA/m.

Said binder is product of reaction of polymer based on at least one complex alkyl ester of alpha j beta-saturated carboxylic acid having 1-25 carbon atoms in alkyl moiety which comprises at least one starter and/or regulator which allow for presence of one end hydroxy group on one of ends of most polymeric chains with at least one multiatomic nonaromatic isocyanate at isocyanate group to hydroxy group molar ratio of (1.2- 3.9):1, reaction of the resulting isocyanate group containing product with at least one compound containing groups reactive with respect to isocyanates at molar ratio of reactive groups to free isocyanate groups present in product of (2-7):1 followed by reaction of the resulting product with at least one compound which reacts with free reactive groups and which introduces acid groups into product or with at least one compound containing groups which are active with respect to isocyanates said compound introduces acid groups into product containing isocyanate groups. Abstract: Magnetic recording medium comprises an upper magnetic recording layer of thickness of less than 0.5 mu m containing a fine magnetic pigment having a coercive force of 100-250 kA/m on a non-magnetic carrier; and a lower isotropic soft magnetic layer made from psi -Fe2O3, Fe3O4 or a mixed crystal of the two. The average crystal size of the lower layer is less than 10 nm. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of a magnetic recording medium. Preferred Features: The magnetic pigment in the upper layer is a metal pigment or a metal alloy pigment, preferably a hexagonal ferrite pigment or a Co-modified psi -Al2O3, Co-modified Fe3O4 or a mixed crystal of these. The soft magnetic pigment in the lower layer is made from an aluminum compound and/or a silicon compound.

Abstract: Preparation of materials (I) having an average molecular weight from 4000 to 30,000, obtainable by reacting 1) a polyurethane (II) comprising a) 1 mol of a diol (III) having an average molecular weight of from 400 to 4000, b) from 0.3 to 9 mol of an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic diol (IV) of 2 to 18 carbon atoms, c) from 0.3 to 9 mol of an aromatic diol (V) of 8 to 30 carbon atoms, d) from 0.01 to 1 mol of a trihydric alcohol (VI) of 3 to 18 carbon atoms, e) from 0.001 to 1 mol of a polyhydric alcohol (VII) of 3 to 14 carbon atoms which contains a tertiary amino group and f) an amount of a diisocyanate (VIII) of 6 to 30 carbon atoms such that the molar ratio of the isocyanate groups to the total number of hydroxyl groups in (III) to (VII) is from 1.05:1 to 1.4:1 with 2) a compound (IX) which contains one or more hydroxyl groups and one or more amino groups reactive toward isocyanate groups, the amount of (IX) being such that the number of reactive amino groups corresponds to the number of isocyanate groups in the polyurethane (II). The materials may be used as crosslinkable binder components for pigment-containing coatings, in particular for the production of magnetic recording materials.
