    Abstract: The invention relates to oligomers which are intrinsically electrically conducting and comprise three to ten structural units, which are completely soluble, in the oxidised form, in dipolar aprotic solvents at room temperature, and which also contain structural units derived from at least one monomer of the formula (I) in which R is a C1-C12-alkoxy group or -O(CH2CH2O)nCH3 where n = 1 to 4 and R is a hydrogen atom, a C1-C12-alkyl group, a C1-C12-alkoxy group or -O(CH2CH2O)nCH3 where n = 1 to 4, or R together with R is -O(CH2)m-CH2 or -O(CH2)m-O- where m = 1 to 12. The invention relates furthermore to a process for the preparation of these oligomers by electrochemical polymerisation of at least one monomer of said formula (I) in the presence of an electrolyte solvent and a conductive salt, the anode consisting of carbon and having a specific surface area of at least 0.02 m /g and a network (reticulated), sponge, fabric or felt structure; the electrolyte is a dipolar aprotic solvent, the electrolyte system is not moved or is moved only slightly relative to the anode, the reaction temperature is in the range from -60 to 80@C and the monomer concentration is from 0.01 to 5 mol/l of electrolyte solvent. The oligomers according to the invention can be employed with particular suitability for coating purposes.

    Abstract: Prodn. of poly-(3-alkoxythiophene) (I) is by electrochemical anodic polymerisation of cpds. of formula (II) or a mixt. of several such cpds.. The process is carried out in an electrolysis cell which is divided by an anion exchange membrane (M), with the anolyte kept in motion relative to the anode. In (II) R = linear or branched 1-15C alkyl, or -(CH2CH2O)pMe (with p = 1-4). Specifically; the anolyte is agitated with a stirrer or circulating pump, pref. so that the flow rate w.r.t. the anode is 0.01-2 (pref. 0.1-1) m/sec.. (M) is based on fluoropolymer, and the catholyte and anolyte contain added conducting salt (III). Electrolysis is carried out at 5-100 (pref. 10-50) mA/cm2; and the electrolysis prod. is washed out of the cell with the anolyte, in which it is partly or completely dissolved or dispersed. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) is useful, e.g. as an antistatic finish for film, fibre, fabric, etc., for controlling the surface charge on non-conductors and for electrical screening. The process can be carried out at high current density, with a marked improvement in surface-time yield. The prod. (I) has very good conductivity, solubility above 2 wt.% and good resistance to air and moisture.

R1, R2 = H, 1-4C alkoxycarbonyl, cyano, or -(CH2)n-X-C(R6,R7)-Z-(CH2)m-R8 (a); and R3 = 1-10C alkyl or -(CH2)r-OH; or R1+R2 or R1+R3 = -(CH2)p-C(R9,R10)-(CH2)q- (b); R4, R5 = 1-10C alkyl, alkoxy, monocyclic aryl(oxy) or R4+R5 = -A-(CH2)s-E-; R6, R7, R8 = H, 1-4C acyclic hydrocarbyl, monocyclic aryl, 1-4C alkoxy(carbonyl), 1-4C alkylamidocarbonyl or cyano or R8 and R6 or R7 = NO2 or P(O)R4R5 or R6 = OR3 and R7 = OR11; R9, R10 = H, 1-4C alkyl, 2-4C alkenyl, 2-4C alkynyl, monocyclic aryl, 1-4C alkoxy(carbonyl), 1-4C alkylamidocarbonyl, CN, NO2, or P(O)R4,R5; R11= 1-10C alkyl or -(CH2)r-OH; A, E = O or CH2; L = O, NH, N(1-4C alkyl) or CH2; X, Y = a bond, vinylene or acetyl; n, m, p, q, r = 0-10, but n+m is not greater than 15; s = 2-10. USE/ADVANTAGE - Cpds. (I) are intermediates for antivirals, herbicides and flameproofing agents. Compared with known processes e.g. as described in Chem. Ber. 108, 2279-2289 (1975), the new process is simple, gives higher yields of cpds. (I), uses accessible starting materials and does not require costly sepn. methods.

    Abstract: Switching and display elements based on ferroelectric liquid-crystals often exhibit a pronounced optical hysteresis which results in the appearance of so-called ghost images. This phenomenon can be markedly reduced or even suppressed if at least one of the two orienting layers are in direct contact with the electrodes and is composed of an electrically conductive polymer of the formula (I): (I) in which R1, R2=independently of each other, H, or straight-chain or branched alkyl or alkoxy containing 1-16 carbon atoms, or halogen, X=S, NH, Y-=BF4-, PF6-, PO43-, AsF6-, SbCl6-, SO42-, HSO4-, alkyl-SO3-, perfluoroalkyl-SO3-, aryl-SO3, F- or Cl-, and n is an integer from 4 to 100 and m is an integer from 1 to 30.
