Abstract: Compounds which contain a polar chiral grouping (moiety) of the formula are suitable for use as a liquid-crystalline medium or as a chiral constituent of liquid-crystalline media in electro-optical switching and display elements which are based on the utilisation of the electroclinic effect and where the liquid-crystalline medium, when in the operating state, is present in the @A, @B or @E phase. These compounds are derivatives of alpha -chlorocarboxylic acids (I), alpha -hydroxypropionic acid (II), proline (III), epoxy compounds (IV) or their thioanalogues (V).

Abstract: The novel compounds are chiral esters of alpha -substituted carboxylic acids and mesogenic phenols which are characterised by the formula (I) in which the symbols have the following meanings: R is straight-chain or branched (C3-C12)alkyl, in which one or two non-adjacent CH2 groups may be replaced by O and/or S atoms, A is diazine-2,5-diyl, Y is F, Cl, Br, CN or CF3, and R is straight-chain (C1-C9)alkyl or branched (C3-C9)alkyl. The compounds are preferably used in tilted, smectic liquid-crystal phases which they convert into ferroelectric liquid-crystal phases; they have or induce high values for spontaneous polarisation.

They lead to liquid-crystalline ferroelectric phases having short response times and to electroclinic phases having large electroclinic coefficients. A further advantage is that they induce a helix of very small pitch, so that they are also suitable for helix compensation in LC mixtures.
