Abstract: The present invention discloses an apparatus and method for adapting a transmission parameter in a transmitting node of a data communication system to the current link quality of a data communication channel. The adapted transmission parameter is selected by the transmitting node from a set of transmission parameters in dependence on a number of successful transmissions. The number of successful transmissions is compared in the transmitting node against one of a first threshold value corresponding to a first state of the transmitting node and a second threshold value corresponding to a second state of the transmitting node. The method comprises in the transmitting node the steps of (a) counting the number of successful transmissions; (b) selecting the adapted transmission parameter (b1) in response to the number of successful transmissions equaling or exceeding the first threshold value when the transmitting node is in the first state, and (b2) in response to the number of successful transmissions equaling or exceeding the second threshold value when the transmitting node is in the second state; and in dependence of the result of a following transmission, operating the transmitting node in one of the first state and the second state.

Abstract: A device and method for determining a number of storage devices for each tier in a multi-tiered storage system comprises; classifying and assigning data to the tiers based on parameters indicating characteristics of both the data and the storage devices and a further set of parameters defining configuration rules; determining the number of storage devices assigned to each of the tiers based on the data assignment, a received cost value and an estimated performance metric; updating the further set of parameters; and re-assigning the data based on the update further set of parameters. The data characteristics might comprise data unit size, an average request size, and an average request rate. The device characteristics might comprise storage capacity, bandwidth and a seek time. The re-assignment of the data might be iterated in a control loop, which is terminated when the estimated performance metric fulfils a termination condition.

Abstract: A tape storage medium comprises at least one data band comprising a set of data sub-bands DSB1-11 adjacent to each other. Each data sub-band contains a set of data tracks along a longitudinal extension x of the tape and adjacent to each other. Each data sub-band of the set comprises a pair of servo tracks ST1, ST2 for determining positional information. The set of data tracks of each data sub-band is arranged between the servo tracks of the pair. Every N-th data sub-band forms a reference data sub-band having servo patterns SP1, SP2, SP3 that are distinct from each other and the servo tracks of the N-1 data sub-bands arranged between reference data sub-bands have servo patterns SP4, SP5 that are distinct from the servo patterns in the reference data sub-bands. Writing data to the tape includes writing a first data sub-band and a pair of servo tracks adjacent to a preformatted servo band and writing further data sub-bands and pairs of servo tracks adjacent to the previously written data sub-band.

Das erste Leseelement (RE1) wird abhängig von der bestimmten Bandtransportrichtung (TPDIR) ausgewählt, wenn es sich bei der bestimmten Bandtransportrichtung (TPDIR) um eine Richtung handelt, bei der sich das Band (TP) zuerst am ersten Leseelement (RE1) und danach am zweiten Leseelement (RE2) vorbeibewegt. Andernfalls wird das zweite Leseelement (RE2) ausgewählt. Ein Positionsfehlersignal (PES1) wird abhängig vom ausgewählten Leseelement bestimmt. Bezüglich eines vorgegebenen seitlichen Referenzpunktes (REF) wird eine bewertete seitliche Spurposition (dest) an einer Längsposition (x1) des ausgewählten Leseelements abhängig vom bestimmten Positionsfehlersignal (PES1) bewertet. Bezüglich des vorgegebenen Referenzpunktes (REF) wird eine andere bewertete seitliche Spurposition ) an einer Längsposition (x2) des nicht ausgewählten Leseelements derart bewertet, dass die andere bewertete seitliche Spurposition ) eine zeitverzögerte Darstellung der seitlichen Spurposition (dest) wird.

Abstract: Method for operating a storage device with a tape (TP) and a head (HU) wherein the head (HU) comprises a first and a second read element (RE1, RE2). Each read element (RE1, RE2) is operable to detect servo-pattern of a particular servo band (SP). The first and the second read element (RE1, RE2) are arranged in such a way, that the tape (TP) at first passes one of both read elements (RE1, RE2) and subsequently passes the other of both read elements (RE1, RE2) when the tape (TP) moves in a predetermined longitudinal direction (X). The first read element (RE1) is selected dependent on the determined tape transport direction (TPDIR), when the determined tape transport direction (TPDIR) represents a direction where the tape (TP) at first passes the first read element (RE1) and subsequently the second read element (RE2). Otherwise the second read element (RE2) is selected. A position error signal (PES1) is determined dependent on the selected read element. With respect to a predetermined lateral reference point (REF) an estimated lateral track position (d est ) at a longitudinal position (x1) of the selected read element is estimated dependent on the determined position error signal (PES1). With respect to the predetermined reference point (REF) another estimated lateral track position (d* est ) at a longitudinal position (x2) of the non- selected read element is estimated in such a way that the other estimated lateral track position (d* est ) becomes a time-delayed representation of the estimated lateral track position (d est ).
