Abstract: In a code division multiple access (CDMA) communications system including one or more terminals (such as customer premise equipments, CPEs) that communicate with a node (such as an Internet gateway) via at least a random access channel and a reservation-oriented channel, various schemes of managing communications traffic among the channels are provided. Decisions as to the channel on which a given terminal may transmit may be based on: traffic statistics (such as packet size or average data rate over a time period), traffic content (such as packet type), the terminal's output buffer loading (queue state, or “Q-state”), a history of the terminal's output buffer loading (one or more Q-states), and so forth. In one application, decisions in managing traffic in a live user's web browsing sessions may involve intelligent ascertainment of whether a given terminal is busy based on traffic analysis or output buffer loading.

Abstract: According to a disclosed embodiment, a first plurality of pilot signals of a first polarization is received and ranked. Subsequently, a second plurality of pilot signals of a second polarization is received and ranked. Following, a pilot signal from the first and second pluralities of pilot signals is selected based on a signal quality measurement such as a signal to interference ratio. Moreover, a system can be constructed comprising antennas configured to receive pilot signals of a first and a second polarization. The system further comprises a receiver configured to demodulate the pilot signals and a CPU configured to rank the pilot signals and to select a pilot signal based on a signal quality measurement. Communication quality is improved by communicating with the base transceiver station transmitting the pilot signal providing the highest signal quality measurement.

Abstract: Systems, methods and apparatus for configuring and accessing a random access channel in a CDMA communication system are disclosed. The number of users supported by a random access channel can be optimized by assigning a distinct time of arrival to each of a plurality of users. Each of the users can be time synchronized and can transmit data at a time that compensates for a propagation delay to allow the data to arrive at the destination receiver at the assigned time. In a CDMA system, each of the users can transmit data that is spread with the same spreading code, provided the cross correlation properties of the code are sufficient to allow identification of a source that is time offset relative to another user. The time of arrival can be determined based on the number of active users, and can be assigned as often as each transmission by each user.

Abstract: An OCDMA transmission arrangement involves encoding both first and second nominally orthogonal polarization signals with a same long code, and transmitting the long-encoded first and second nominally orthogonal polarization signals from respective first and second transmission sources to at least one destination. A corresponding OCDMA demodulating arrangement demodulates the first and second nominally orthogonal polarization signals that were transmitted from respective first and second transmission sources after having been encoded with the same long code. The demodulation arrangement involves receiving the encoded first and second nominally orthogonal polarization signals, and applying the same long code to the received encoded first and second nominally orthogonal polarization signals.
