Abstract: A system and method for a multi-band direct conversion wireless communication receiver is presented. The system incorporates a low noise amplifier (LNA) configured to amplify received RF signals, a local oscillator (LO) configured to output a frequency, and I and Q channel mixers. Each mixer has a first input operatively coupled to the LNA, a second input operatively coupled to the LO output, and an output. The system further includes an adjustment mechanism configured to adjust drive level of the LO depending on a level of jammers detected by the receiver. Thus, the receiver may operate in multiple wireless communication bands and modes and meet the associated specifications.

Abstract: A portable phone has an outer casing with opposite upper and lower walls, one of the walls having an opening for access to the interior of the casing, and a lid removably mounted in the opening for normally closing the opening. A main circuit board is mounted in the outer casing, with a plurality of phone components mounted on the circuit board. A predetermined region of the board aligned with the opening is left exposed or empty of components, and forms a recess for receiving a battery. The battery receiving recess has contact pads, and a battery is removably engaged in the recess with battery contacts engaging the contact pads in the recess, whereby the battery can be removed and replaced via the opening after opening the lid.

Abstract: A system and method for generating a local oscillator (LO) frequency in a zero intermediate frequency (IF) receiver or transmitter is presented. A signal is received from a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). The signal has a VCO frequency. The VCO frequency is divided by a number N to produce a signal having a divided-down frequency. The signal having the VCO frequency is then mixed with the signal having the divided-down frequency to produce an output signal having an output frequency. Local oscillator leakage is reduced. Thus, the receiver or transmitter may operate in multiple wireless communication bands and modes and meet the associated specifications.

Abstract: The method and apparatus of the present invention improve the immunity to interference of a radio receiver. The power level of a received signal is detected. If the power level meets or exceeds a predetermined power threshold, the low noise amplifier (703) is by-passed (730), thus increasing the intercept point of the receiver components. Alternative embodiments include the use of an RF power detector (105) to control the front-end gain (110) as a function of jammer power. In lieu of a switchable RF gain block (730), several methods of continuous gain control are proposed. Continuous gain control allows the interference suppression and sensitivity of the receiver to be adjusted at lower signal levels than the switchable gain block. A method of the present invention adjusts the input gain by a predetermined amount (1601). The receiver processing measures the gain change in the IF signal power (1605). If the change is less than the predetermined amount (1610), the CDMA signal and jammers are below the noise floor and, therefore, the gain is increased (1615). If the IF signal power change is greater than the predetermined amount, the interference is evident and the gain is reduced to reduce the intermodulation products (1620). This process is used until the receiver is operating at the best compromise between interference and noise figure.

Abstract: An automatic gain control (AGC) apparatus for a digital receiver is disclose d herein. The AGC apparatus includes an adjustable gain amplifier (18) having an input port for receiving an input signal, a co ntrol port for receiving a gain control signal, and an o utput port for providing an output signal. The AGC apparatus further includes a measur ement circuit for generating a received power signal bas ed on the power of the output signal. A saturating integrator (22) compares th e received power signal to a reference signal and genera tes a gain control signal in response to a result of the comparison. The saturati ng integrator (22) includes a decision circuit (46) for enabling integration based on values of the received power signal, the reference sign al, and the gain control signal. In a preferred impleme ntation, the utilization of an input limiter in conjunction with an analog to digital converter enables accommodation of an increased input s ignal dynamic range.
