    Abstract: A method and corresponding apparatus for depositing a substance with temperature control on a surface of a substrate are disclosed. The method comprises the steps of : providing a cooling block having a surface that is cooled by heat exchange ; supporting said substrate from said cooling block so that the bottom surface of said substrate is spaced from said cooling block surface by a gap ; providing a gas in said gap ; and depositing said substance on the top surface of said substrate. With such a method, the temperature conditions are uniform and repeatable when depositing a substance on a substrate. The invention is especially applicable to deposition of diamond by plasma jet.

    Abstract: A method of making a diamond coated insert (310) includes, obtaining a substrate (204) of durable and diamond adherent material having a substantially smooth surface on which is coated a diamond layer (222) using any known CVD technique, and partitioning the diamond covered substrate (204) with a laser beam into multiple inserts (310) with desired geometries. If desired, the insert edges (318a-c) and corners (320a-c) may be thereafter machined or ablated until the desired smoothness and finish are achieved, and a fastening throughbore (324) may be preformed or drilled in the center of each insert (310). The diamond coated inserts (310) as formed have a top surface entirely coated by a surface layer (222) of diamond of a first thickness, and at least one rake face (208) which is not diamond coated beyond the surface layer (222) of diamond.
