Abstract: A gas laser for emitting ultraviolet laser light with a wave length of 248-249 nm, the gas mixture in the resonance chamber containing krypton, fluor or a fluor compound, and argon in such quantities that at room temperature the partial argon pressure exceeds 0.5 bar and the partial pressure of krypton and fluor or the fluor compound is smaller than 0.2 bar. The gas mixture in the resonance chamber also contains neon in such a quantity that its partial pressure at room temperature is at least equal to that of the argon.

Abstract: The Kinetic energy of slowly moving charged particles is measured by counting the numbers of particles from a source (12) which reach a detector (10) when various different strengths of magnetic field are applied to the propagation path. The strength also differs along the propagation path, being stronger nearer the source. The magnetic field has a braking effect on the particles causing them to follow a spiral path, and the lower the Kinetic energy, the less likely the particle is to reach the detector. The source consists of a coil (17) and a magnetic circuit (10) consisting of four poles (13,14,15,16), reduced in volume at the centre to provide saturation. The path field is provided by a winding (19).

Fissile material (e.g. UO 2 ) is circulated through a reactor 1 in suspension in a carrier liquid such as H 2 O or D 2 O, the suspension being diluted outside the reactor to reduce the viscosity and thereby assist circulation. On leaving the reactor the fuel suspension flows through a heat exchanger 14 and then into a conduit 16 where more carrier liquid is added. The fuel suspension is then pumped through a vertical pipe 6 by helium or carbon dioxide, supplied by a pump 7, and through a hydrocyclone thickener 12 to return the concentrated suspension to the reactor. D 2 and H 2 formed by radiation are catalytically oxidized at 9a and the resultant water returned to 8. Gaseous fission products are removed at 10 and fission products in solution are removed from the carrier liquid at 18. Some of the carrier liquid may be added through a valve 20 to the flow through the heat exchanger 14. Heavy water 2 is pumped through a heat exchanger 5. The reactor is surrounded by a bismuth reflector 3. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), solid moderator particles of BeO are also suspended in the carrier liquid and the suspension is kept mixed in the reactor by a vibrostirrer.
