Abstract: 1,3,4-Thiadiazole derivatives are produced by reacting a thiocarboxylic acid hydrazide with an acylating agent in a solvent or diluent at 20-150 DEG C., preferably 1.1 moles of acylating agent per mole of hydrazide being used. The acylating agents have the general formula R2-CO-X in which R2 is an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic araliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical, or the radical -R-CO-Y in which R is an alkylene or arylene radical and Y is a bromine or chlorine atom and X is a bromine or chlorine atom or the radical R3-CO-O- in which R3 is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic or aromatic radical, the thiocarboxylic acid hydrazide has the formula R1-CS-NH-NH2 in which R1 is an aromatic, araliphatic or heterocyclic radical. Any of R1, R2 and R3 may bear inert groups under the reaction conditions, e.g. nitro, alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxyl, amino, carboxyl, nitrile, N,N-dialkylformamidinium chloride groups or halogen atoms. Examples describe the preparation of 5-phenyl-, 5-(41-nitrophenyl)-, 5-methyl, and 5-thiophenyl-, -2-phenyl - 1,3,4 - thiadiazole; 2-(41-methoxyphenyl)-, and 2 - (41 - nitrophenyl)-5-phenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole.ALSO:Anthraquinone derivatives of 1,3,4-thiadiazole are obtained by reacting a thiocarboxylic acid hydrazide with an acylating agent, the anthraquinone residue being present in either or both of the reactants. The reaction is carried out in a solvent or diluent at 20-150 DEG C., preferably 1.1 mols. of acylating agent per mol. of hydrazide being used. The acylating agents have the general formula R2-CO-X in which R2 is an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical, or the radical -R-CO-Y in which R is an alkylene or arylene radical and Y is a bromine or chlorine atom, and X is a bromine or chlorine atom or the radical R3-CO-O- in which R3 is a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic or aromatic radical. The thiocarboxylic acid hydrazide has the formula R1-CS-NH-NH2 in which R1 is an aromatic, araliphatic or heterocyclic radical. Any of R1, R2 and R3 may bear groups which are inert under the reaction conditions, e.g. nitro, alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxyl, amino, carboxyl, nitrile, N,N-dialkylformamidinum chloride groups or halogen atoms. In Example 8, 4-nitro-thiobenzoic acid hydrazide is reacted with 1-amino-4-nitroanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid chloride to give a blue vat dye, 2 - [1 - amino - 4 - nitroanthraquinonyl-(2)] - 5 - (4 - nitrophenyl) - 1,3,4 - thiadiazole.

Abstract: An electrophotographic recording medium which consists essentially of an electrically conductive base and a photosemiconductive double layer which comprises a first layer containing charge carrier-producing dyes, and a second layer containing one or more compounds which are charge carrier-transporting when exposed to light, wherein the charge carrier-producing dyes are those of the general formula I I where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each hydrogen or a non-ionic substituent, X and Y are each the radical of a methylene-active compound, or of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic amine or hydrazine, and Z is hydrogen, methyl or phenyl, and the production of this recording medium.
