    Abstract: A rubber elastic block copolymer has at least one block A made of polymerised units of a vinyl aromatic monomer that forms a hard phase and/or a block B with diene monomers that forms a first rubber elastic (soft) phase, and at least one elastomer block B/A with polymerised units of both a vinyl aromatic monomer and a diene that forms if required a second or additional soft phase. The glass transition temperature Tg of block A is higher than 25 ~C and that of blocks B or B/A is lower than 25 ~C. The phase volume ratio between blocks A and B/A is selected so that the hard phase represents 1 - 40 % by volume of the total block copolymer and the diene amounts to less than 50 % by weight.

    Abstract: A process for the continuous preparation of rubber-modified polymers of vinylaromatics, wherein a mixture which contains a monomeric aromatic vinyl compound and an elastomeric polymer synthesized predominantly from 1,3-dienes is reacted in the presence of from 0.5 x 10-2 to 5 x 10-2 mole %, based on monomer, of a per-ester or diacyl peroxide as the free radical initiator and of a mercaptan as a chain transfer agent, the molar ratio of free radical initiator to chain transfer agent being from 3.4 to 0.1. The reaction takes place at an elevated temperature, in two or more process stages, under conditions such that the intrinsic viscosity (determined in 0.5% strength by weight solution in toluene at 23.degree.C) of the matrix-forming polymer, produced from the vinyl-aromatic monomer, is from 65 to 45 ml/g. The polymer obtained is freed from vinyl-aromatic monomer and from solvent, is any, in a devolatilization zone and is used for the production of injection moldings.

    Abstract: A process for preparing impact-modified styrene polymers (HIPS) omprises anionic polymerization of styrene in the presence of a rubber in one or more polymerization reactors in succession. The rubber is prepared in solution in an immediately upstream process. The heat of polymerization is utilized to remove the solvent for the rubber, this solvent having a boiling point lower than those of styrene and ethylbenzene, from at least one of the polymerization reactors via distillation with distillative cooling, and the solvent is reintroduced into the process of rubber preparation.

    Abstract: A process for preparing a solution of high molecular weight polymers of conjugated dienes in a vinylaromatic hydrocarbon by anionic polymerization of the diene in the presence of an alkyllithium as catalyst and a process for preparing impact-modified polymers of vinylaromatic compounds is described. The first process comprises firstly polymerizing the diene in solution in an aromatic hydrocarbon which is free of ethylenic double bonds to a molecular weight below about 105, then adding a trialkylaluminum in a molar excess relative to the alkyllithium, diluting the solution obtained with the vinylaromatic compound and then coupling the polydiene with a polyepoxide or an alkyl (meth)acrylate to give a high molecular weight polymer. The solution obtained in this way is further processed to give an impact-modified polymer of a vinylaromatic hydrocarbon by polymerizing the solution prepared as described, if desired after addition of further amounts of a vinylaromatic compound, in a manner known per se.
