Abstract: A process is proposed for preparing acid formates by providing a liquid stream I containing formic acid and a liquid stream II containing a metal formate, and mixing the liquid stream I with the liquid stream II, obtaining the corresponding acid formate, which comprises feeding, to the liquid stream I or a precursor thereof, to the liquid stream II or a precursor thereof, or to the mixture of the liquid streams I and II, a liquid stream III containing the following components at contents of in each case >0.1% by weight: metal formate, metal methoxide, methanol and MeFo (MeFo), which is produced in a process for preparing MeFo by carbonylating methanol in a reactor at a pressure up to 50 MPa absolute in the presence of a metal methoxide as homogeneous catalyst.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing a solid sodium diformate preparation having a minimum formic acid concentration of 35 percent by weight relative to the total weight of the sodium diformate preparation. According to said method, an aqueous solution having a molar ratio HCOOH: HCOONa of more than 1.5:1 and a molar ratio HCOOH: H2O of at least 1.1:1 is produced from sodium formate and at least 74 percent by weight of formic acid at an elevated temperature, the aqueous solution is crystallized, and the solid phase is separated from the mother liquor. (i) A partial amount (A) of the mother liquor is used during the production of the aqueous solution while (ii) a partial amount (B) of the mother liquor is mixed with a sodium-containing base and the obtained sodium formate-containing mixture is also used during the production of the aqueous solution, optionally after separating a portion of the same and optionally after concentrating the same, the partial amounts (A) and (B) of the mother liquor amounting to 100 percent by weight.

Abstract: La presente invencion se refiere a un procedimiento para producir una preparacion de diformato de sodio solida que tiene un contenido de acido formico de por lo menos 35% en peso, basado en el peso total de preparacion de diformato de sodio en donde, a temperatura elevada del formato de sodio y por lo menos con 74% de concentracion en peso del acido formico, es producida una solucion acuosa que tiene una relacion molar HCOOH:HCOONa superior a 1,5:1 y una relacion molar HCOOH:H2O de por lo menos 1,1:1, la solucion acuosa es llevada a la cristalizacion, y la fase solida es separada del licor madre, (i) una subcantidad (A) del licor madre e usada en la produccion de solucion acuosa y (ii) siendo una subcantidad (B) del licor madre mezclada con una base conteniendo sodio y la mezcla resultante que comprende formato de sodio, si fuera apropiado despues de eliminar una parte de la misma, y si fuera apropiado despues concentrar la misma, es usada igualmente en la produccion de la solucion acuosa; y las subcantidades (A) y (B) de licor madre totalizan 100% en peso.

Abstract: Formic acid-formates are produced by (a) partial hydrolysis of methyl formate (MF) with water, (b) distillation to give (S1) formic acid and water, (c) conversion of the other product from (b) (mainly MF) into a stream (S2) containing formate and water by reaction with aqueous strong base and distillation of methanol, and (d) combination of (S1) with (S2). A method for the production of formic acid-formates (I) involves: (a) partial hydrolysis of methyl formate (MF) with water; (b) distillation to give a stream (S1) containing formic acid and water; (c) conversion of the MF- and possibly methanol-containing stream from (b) into a formate- and water-containing stream (S2) by (i) reaction with a basic compound of an acid with a pKa value of at least 3 in presence of water followed by (ii) removal of methanol by distillation; and (d) combination of streams (S1) and (S2). An Independent claim is also included for apparatus for the production of (I), comprising: (A) a reactor for the hydrolysis of MF; (B) a distillation column for separating a stream containing MF, formic acid, methanol and water; (C) a column for the hydrolysis of MF with a basic compound with removal of methanol by distillation (with an inlet for the base above the inlet for the product from (B)); and (D) a column connected to the bottom of (B) for removing water from the stream containing formic acid and water.
