Abstract: This invention relates to a process for preparing cellular polymers having urethane groups, isocyanurate groups, or both. The cellular polymers are prepared by reacting an organic polyisocyanate with certain polymer dispersions in the presence of a blowing agent. The polymer dispersions comprise (a) as a continuous phase, a polyol having a functionality of 2 to 8 and a hydroxyl number of 150 to 700; and (b) as a dispersed phase, an organic compound having (a) at least one Zerewitinoff active hydrogen atom, (b) a melting point of 30 DEG C. to 260 DEG C., and (c) a molecular weight of 178 to 100,000.

Abstract: Thickeners are prepd. by copolymerising monomer mixts. contg., by wt., (a) 20-70% (meth)acrylic acid and/or maleic-, fumaric- and/or itaconic acid mono-esters, (b) 30-80% (meth)acrylates and/or vinyl esters of 2-4C monocarboxylic acids, (c) 0-10% (meth)accrylonitrile and/or (meth)acrylamide, (d) 0-30% opt. substd. styrene and (e) 0-2% of >=1 monomer contg. >=2 ethylenically unsatd. double bonds, in an inert solvent, by pptn. polymerisation, using polymerisation initiators. Polymerisation is at 100-150(105-125) degrees C in the presence of 2-10wt.%, w.r.t. monomers, of a C2H4-C3H6 elastomer contg. 10wt.% inter-polymerised no(-conjugated diene. The elastomer has I2-index 1-15 and Mooney viscosity (100 degrees C, ML 1+4), 30-55. The thickeners can be used inthe prepn. of printing pastes, paper coating mixts. and aq. coating compsns. Elastomer presence prevents formation of highly crosslinked copolymers which do not dissolve in aq. alkali solns. In polymerisation, the elastomers act as protective colloids and are built into the copolymer.

Abstract: Aq. dispersions of polymers are prepd. by polymerising a mono-olefinically unsatd. monomer in a mixt. of water, a water-miscible organic solvent and a high-mol. water-sol. cpd. with OH, COOH, carboxamide and/or ether gps., with pptn. of the polymer formed; the solvent is then at least partly sepd. The catalysts does not need to be water-sol; water-dispersable catalysts are suitable. The dispersions have high pigment-binding capacity. The dispersions are lacquers, coating compsns. impregnants and adhesives, opt. with addn. of other binders. Alternatively, the polymer can be isolated.

COOMe, CH2:CHCN and/or CH2:MECN, (b) 20-60, pref. 30-55% polymerisable ester(s) of a 3-5C olefinically unsatd. carboxylic acid with 1-18C alkanol and (c) 3-25 pref. 5-15% alpha, beta-ethylenically unsatd. mono- or di-carboxylic acid, with a melt viscosity of 500-10,000 Pas at 120 degrees C and (B) 8-40, pref. 10-30 pts. epoxide cpd(s) of formula:- (in which R is H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, acyl n = 0-10). Compsn. is used as soln. or pref. powder lacquer for coating domestic appliances, pipes, wire netting, window frames, sheet metal for facades and car bodies. Compsn. is free from discolouration and very resistant to weathering. The brittleness at room temp. allows grinding.

The compsn. can also contain the usual additives, e.g. flow aids, catalysts, pigments and/or fillers. Compsn. is used as soln. or pref. powder lacquers for coating domestic appliances, pipes wire netting, window frames, sheet metal for facades and car bodies. The compsn. is free from discolouration and very resistant to weathering. The brittleness at room temp. allows grinding.
