Producing an aqueous polymer dispersion with a K value of 10-60 by radical-initiated emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising 30-99 wt.% t-butyl (meth)acrylate, 1-28 wt.% (meth)acrylic acid and 0-60 wt.% of a comonomer whose homopolymer has a glass transition temperature below 30[deg]C comprises using a thiol-functional chain transfer agent of formula (I). HS-(CR1>R2>)m-A (I) m : 8 or more; R1>, R2>H or 1-8C alkyl; A : COOH, COOR3>, CONR4>R5>, OCONR4>R5>, NHCONR4>R5>, SO3H, OSO3H, OPO3H3 or PO3H2; R3>1-6C alkyl; R4>, R5>H or 1-6C alkyl optionally substituted with OH, OR6> and/or NR7>R8>; R6>1-6C alkyl; and R7>, R8>H or 1-6C alkyl. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) polymer dispersion produced as above; and (2) polymer powder produced from the dispersion.
