Date Oct. 14, 1993.Catalyst systems for the polymerization of C2-C10-alk-1-enes contain, as active components, a) a metallocene complex of the general formula I III, IV or v of the Periodic Table of elements or a metal selected from the group consisting of the lanthanides, X is fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, hydrogen, C1-C10-alkyl, C6-C15-aryl or -OR7, R7 is C1-C10-alkyl, C6-C15-aryl, alkylaryl, arylalkyl, fluoroalkyl or fluoroaryl, in each case having 1 to 10 carbon atoms in the alkyl radical and 6 to 20 carbon atoms in the aryl radical, n is the valency of M minus two, R1 to R6 are each hydrogen, C1-C10-alkyl, 5-membered to 7-membered cycloalkyl which in turn may carry C1-C10-alkyl as a substituent, C6-C15-aryl or arylalkyl, where two adjacent radicals together may furthermore form a cyclic group of 4 to 15 carbon atoms, or Si(R8)3, R8 is C1-C10-alkyl, C6-C15-aryl or C3-C10-cycloalkyl, E1 and E2 are independent of one another and are each Si(R9)2, Ge(R9)2, Sn(R9)2 or C(R9)2-C(R9)2 and R9 is C1-C10-alkyl, C3-C10-cycloalkyl or C6-C15-aryl, and b) an open-chain or cyclic alumoxane compound of the general formula II or III II n integer of from 5 to 30.

    Abstract: A novel Phillips catalyst for the homopolymerisation of ethylene and the copolymerisation of ethylene with alpha -olefins contains, as catalytically active components, a specific aluminium phosphate-supported chromium catalyst and cocatalysts of the general formulae I to IV MR M R2 M R 3-nXn MM RR@ (I) (II) (III) (IV> in which the index and variables have the following meanings: M is lithium, sodium or potassium, M is magnesium or zinc, M is boron or aluminium, R is C1- to C10-alkyl or C6- to C20-aryl, R is R or C1- to C10-alkoxy or C6- to C20-aryloxy, X is chlorine, bromine or iodine, N is 0, 1 or 2. The aluminium phosphate-supported chromium catalyst is obtainable by applying chromium compounds to a finely divided aluminium phosphate having a P:Al molar ratio of close or equal to 1 and a pore volume of > 1 cm /g, and activating the resulting intermediate at elevated temperatures in an oxidising atmosphere. The novel Phillips catalyst has an extremely long mean service life, and its productivity can be further increased by adding hydrogen.

    Abstract: Ethene homopolymers and ethene copolymers with minor amounts of higher alpha -monoolefins are prepared by polymerization of the monomer or monomers using a chromium trioxide catalyst which is obtained by a method in which (1) a finely divided, porous, silicate carrier is laden with (2) chromium trioxide or a chromium compound which is converted to chromium trioxide under the conditions of stage (3), and then (3) the intermediate resulting from stage (2) is heated in an oxygen-containing gas stream. In this process, a cocatalyst which consists of a lithiumalkyl used in addition to the chromium trioxide catalyst.
