Abstract: The apparatus is particularly suitable for controlling rotational speed of an inner housing (26) relative to an outer housing (12) in a centrifuge in which both housings rotate about a common axis. A reflector (58) is provided on the inner housing offset from the axis and an optic fibre (52) extends through the outer housing along the axis and terminates in the outer housing at a position offset from the axis to transmit radiation from a source (42) to impinge on the reflector. Reflected radiation is transmitted back down the optic fibre and is sensed by a sensor (66) as an indication of rotational velocity of the inner housing. A second sensor (74) senses the rotational speed of the outer housing (12) and a control system (70) compares the outposts of the sensors and controls the relative rotational velocities of the housings.

Abstract: Blood processing systems and methods separate blood into constituents including a plasma constituent that includes a platelet volume. The systems and methods detect the optical density of the plasma constituent and generate a first output indicative of the optical density. A processing element integrates the first output relative to the volume of plasma constituent and generates an integrated output. The integrated output correlates to the platelet volume. A second processing element generates a third output based, at least in part, upon the integrated output, which comprises parameters for storing the platelet volume.

Blood conveyed into the separation zone separates into a first region of cellular components (96), a second region of plasma (98), and an interface region (58) between the first and second regions. An outlet conveys the second region of plasma from the separation zone. An interior wall (84, 86) extends into the separation zone to permit passage of the second region plasma to the outlet while retarding passage of the interface region and first of cellular components to the outlet.

Abstract: A system and method for treating a fluid carrying a contaminant to which a photoactive material has been bound include a treatment device that defines a flow passage with a gap. The system and method operate to establish a flow of fluid from the inlet end of the gap to the outlet end of the gap. The system and method also channel the flow of fluid in the gap in succession through one or more flow paths. The system and method establish at least two discrete sources of radiation in the flow path at spaced apart locations along the direction of fluid flow. At least one of the radiation sources comprises a photodiode. The system and method further include a control for operating each discrete source of radiation at a selected wavelength within the prescribed range to activate the photoactive material bound to the contaminant. Upon activation, the material eradicates the contaminant. The system and method provide extracorporeal treatment of fluids like blood to quickly and effectively eradicate infection agents at relatively high flow rates.
