Abstract: Ferroelectric liq. crystal mixts. (I) are claimed, consisting of at least 2 components, at least one of which is a complex ligand for ions (II). More specifically (II) are complex ligands for cations, pref. electrically neutral cpds. which complex cations and contain at least 2 N- and/or O- and/or P-donor centres; (II) are medium- or macro-cyclic cpds., namely cryptands, coronands, podands, bicyclic cpds. with at least 2 N atoms, or bicyclic or tricyclic cpds., pref. with at least 2 N atoms and at least 4 C atoms; (I) contains at least 2 different ligands (II), pref. at least one ligand for alkali and/or alkaline earth ions, esp. pref. at least 2 different complex ligands for different cations; (II) is a cpd. of formula (III) or (IV). In the formulae Z = O or S; m, n = integers above 0; m + n = 2-6; X1, X2 = Z, NR, -Z-(o-phenylene)-Z-, -Z-(1,2-cyclohexylene)-Z-, or X1 and X2 together = =N-CH2(CH2-Z-CH2)1-CH2-N=, =N-CO(CH2-Z-CH2)1-CO-N= or =CH-CH2(CH2ZCH2)2-CH2-CH= (with R = 1-15C alkyl or alkoxy, Ph, benzyl or -COPh; l = 1 or 2); R1-R4 = H, 1-12C alkyl, p-tolyl, Ph, -CH2-(p-phenylene)-COOH or benzyl; p, q, r, s = 2-4; p + q + r + s = 8-16; (I) contain 0.01-10 mol.% (II) and have spontaneous polarisation at least 35 nC/cm2.

Abstract: The liquid-crystal element described consists of a housing with transparent discs and electrodes, polarisation foils, orientation films, plus a smectic ferro-electric liquid-crystalline material. This FLC material is dielectrically positive (i.e. DELTA epsilon >0), with the result that the liquid-crystal element has a high contrast and, in addition, is switchable even when high voltages (e.g. greater than 15 V) are applied. Unlike LC elements with dielectrically negative material, no change in surface texture occurs under such conditions. The increase in the effective cone angle produced by applying an electric field to the element described above can also be used to produce so-called grey shades.
