Abstract: A process for electroplating chromium comprising pre-treating the surface of a part to be plated with chromium by forming a deposit of a sulphur compound thereon, which sulphur compound accelerates the reduction of chromium ions to chromium metal. Preferably the deposit is formed cathodically in a solution containing a sulphur species. The sulphur species include thiocyanate, or species having S-O or S-S bonds: or a species having a -C=S or -C-S group within the molecule. Alternatively the sulphur compound can be chemically deposited by evaporating sulphur on to the surface or by immersing the part in a solution of sulphide ions.

Abstract: This disclosure relates a bright dip for chromium electroplated from a solution containing chromium (III) thiocyanate complexes comprising a ferricyanide solution capable of forming complexes with chromium hydroxide species and of detaching the complexes once formed from the surface of an electroplated deposit without significant attack or etching of the deposit. The ferricyanide solution preferably comprises K3Fe(CN)6. The solution is preferably alkaline.

Abstract: An electrochromic display device and method of operating it are described in which said display device operates by the reversible redox reaction of an active electrochromic material and which has one or more display electrodes and means to supply current selectively to selected display electrodes, characterised in that each display electrode has a rough surface in contact with the active electrochromic material, and that, in operation of the device, the current density supplied to the display electrodes is such that the bulk concentration interface of the electrochromic material conforms to the contour of the rough electrode surface during the deposition of coloured species.

Abstract: ELECTROCHROMIC DISPLAY DEVICE In an electrochromic display device, it is desirable that the counter electrode is maintained at a constant potential to enable reference electrodes to be dispensed with. This is achieved, in the preferred embodiment, by a secondary redox system which senses the potential of the counter electrode by means of a conductor connecting the counter electrode and the electrode of the secondary system. When the potential of the counter electrode falls below a given value, the secondary system, which is connected to the display electrolyte through an ion exchange membrane, charges the counter electrode with electrochromic material. The counter electrode may be a grid.

Abstract: ELECTROCHROMIC DISPLAY DEVICE In a flat panel electrochromic display, the counter electrode is in the form of a pattern of opaque conductive lines on the underside of the front face of the panel. The electrode is precharged to a known potential by depositing electrochromic material thereon. This arrangement solves the erasure problem for matrix displays with a large number of display electrodes.
