Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing an efficient dormant mode for push-to-talk communication devices (102, 104, 106) in a group communication network (100) provides for determining whether the net has been inactive for a predetermined first time period and, if so, causing each member of the net to enter a control-hold mode, wherein each member of the net maintains its dedicated traffic channel. The method further includes the steps of determining whether each member of the net has been in the control-hold mode for a predetermined second time period and, if so, causing each member of the net to enter a dormant mode, wherein each member of the net releases its dedicated traffic channel. The method and apparatus further provides for causing each member of the net to cache its service configuration state before entering the dormant mode.

Abstract: A method and apparatus provides for delivering information to an idle mobile station in a group communication network (100) includes delivering the information to the mobile station in special form, e.g., short data burst (SDB) form, if the information is smaller than a predetermined size limit. In one embodiment, the method and apparatus provides for encapsulating the information inside a frame, forwarding the frame to a server (110) for delivery to the mobile station (102, 104, 106), and causing the server (110) to extract the information from the frame and deliver the information to the mobile station on a forward common channel. In one embodiment, the method and apparatus provides for receiving information for delivery to the mobile station (102, 104, 106), the information being tagged for delivery on a forward common channel, and delivering the information to the mobile station (102, 104, 106) on the forward common channel. In one aspect, the method delivers the information when the mobile station (102, 104, 106) is in idle state with no traffic channel.

Abstract: A service for Public Safety (PS) and Law Enforcement (LE) users on commer cial wireless networks which assure them access to packet data services. The service request is application based. The applications that are for officia l use, by the PS/LE users, could have a reserved priority level associated w ith them. The reserved priority level could be higher than a normal commerci al user. The network could use the priority to distinguish users, and dynami cally allocate and optimize network resources. The network could use priorit y level information to perform access, admission, and congestion control. Th e PS/LE user could use the official applications while on duty and un-offici al ones while off duty, thus, additionally freeing up network resources. The PS/LE users could then use advanced commercial packet data services, withou t the need for a private network, while at the same time making it feasible for commercial networks.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for adding a member to an active call in a group communication network provides for receiving a member list from a user and sending a request to a server to add the member list to the active group call. The method and apparatus further provides for announcing each member in the member list that they are being added to the group call, receiving acknowledgement from a member who wishes to participate in the group call, and forwarding media to the member. The method and apparatus also provides for a significant reduction in the actual total dormancy wakeup time and latency by exchanging group call signaling even when mobiles are dormant and no traffic channel is active.
