Abstract:
This invention relates to a process for nitrating toluene to produce dinitrotoluene characterized by a liquid phase nitration characterized in that reaction of anhydrous nitric acid with toluene in a reactor at a reaction temperature of between 20 DEG C and 30 DEG C for a reaction time of less than 15 minutes, said reaction employing a molar ratio of nitric acid plus any water to toluene of between 10:1 and 15:1, said reaction being conducted in the absence of sulfuric acid, and in the absence of any aprotic dipolar solvent during the reaction and in the absence of any aprotic dipolar solvent to halt the reaction, to produce said dinitrotoluene in a product mixture that is free of nitrocresol, followed by vacuum distillation of the product mixture, in the absence of any aprotic dipolar solvent, to remove unreacted nitric acid from said product mixture thereby providing said dinitrotoluene.

In a method for continuous nitration of a nitrable aromatic compound, which forms an azeotrope with water, by treating with nitric acid in the presence of nitrating acids, the reaction is carried out with a molar ratio of nitric acid to the aromatic compound of at least 1:1, the temperature and the pressure being coordinated so that the reaction mixture boils, the nitrating acid is recycled without further intermediate treatment, the resulting mixture is extracted with water and the eluate is returned to the reaction to restore the nitrating acid.

PURPOSE: A method for successively manufacturing nitrobenzene is provided to maintain the quality of products and to remarkably increase space-time yield at the same time. CONSTITUTION: A method for successively manufacturing nitrobenzene comprises a step for nitriding benzene with acids for nitration in a reaction space for dispersing benzene and acids for nitration, wherein (a) the acid for nitration contains 3.0 weight % nitric acid and 67.0 weight % or more of sulfuric acid, based on 100 weight % acids for nitration; (b) a reaction start temperature is more than 100.0 °C and less than 102.0 °C; (c) an emulsion of acids for nitration with benzene before a nitric acid conversion rate becomes 60%; and (d) 60% or more of used nitric acid is converted within 13 volume % of a reaction space after initial dispersion.
