Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and inexpensively produce a material that swells when immersed in or exposed to water existing in its service ambience without impairing the properties inherent in a flexible resin or rubber used therein.
SOLUTION: The material, a swelling one, is obtained by approximately homogeneously compounding the flexible resin or rubber with sodium chloride. In this material, any substance that imparts the flexible resin or rubber with swelling tendency other than sodium chloride is not compounded. On exposing this material to water, water is absorbed into the sodium chloride by the action of osmotic pressure, resulting in swelling the whole material to the extent corresponding to the water absorption. By the way, sodium chloride is inexpensive, being nontoxic even in case of being dissolved in water.
