Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the polycondensation of organic silicon compounds at pH values between 6 and 8 in the presence of a lipase, said lipase being optionally immobilised on a carrier consisting of polymer materials. Suitable polycondensable organic silicon compounds are (RO)(R O)(R O)(R O)Si, (RO)(R O)(R O)(R O)SiR , (RO)(R O)Si(R )(R ) and (RO)SiR R R with R, R , R and R independently representing C1- to C10-alkyl, C3- to C10-cycloalkyl, C4- to C20-alkylcycloalkyl, aryl, C6- to C16-alkylaryl, the alkyl groups being linear or branched. It is advantageous that the lipase can be obtained relatively easily by means of large-scale fermentation processes. Lipases from Pseudomona species are preferable.

Abstract: Isolated nucleic acid (I) that encodes a polypeptide (II) with L-pantolactone hydrolase activity is (i) a 810 bp sequence (1); (ii) equivalents of (i) within the degeneracy of the genetic code; (iii) derivatives of (1) that encode a polypeptide at least 50% homologous with a 269 amino acid protein (2) and having essentially the same enzymatic activity; and (iv) functional equivalents of (i)-(iii). Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) protein (IIa) encoded by (I); (b) nucleic acid construct (A) containing (A) linked to at least one regulatory sequence; (c) vector containing (I) or (A); (d) microorganisms containing (I), (A) or the vector of (c); and (e) production of D-pantolactone by treating the racemate with an L-pantolactone hydrolase.
