Abstract: A toughened thermoplastic moulding composition (I) contains: (A) 50-80 wt.% of a copolymer comprising (with respect to (A)) polymerised units of (A1) 15-63 wt.% 1,1-diphenylethylene and (A2) 37-85 wt.% styrene; (B) 5-35 wt.% of a tri-block copolymer comprising blocks (B1), block composed of comonomers of (A), (B2) an elastomeric block and, (B3) polystyrene; (C) at least 5 wt.% polystyrene and/or a polymer miscible with polystyrene and; (D) 0.1-40 wt.% of a rubber.

Abstract: In a method for the production of linear block copolymers, which contain at least a sequence A-B-C of a block A of radically polymerizable monomers (a), a block B of monomers (b) and a block C of radically polymerizable monomers (c), the monomers (a), (b) and (c), which are different from each other, are made to react with (1) radical polymerization of monomers (c) with a macro radical initiator (I) of general formula Y-B-X-B-Y, in which X and Y are divisible functional groups upon formation of radicals, whereby X can be separated without fission from Y, under conditions leading to the formation of macro radical initiators (II) which contain the sequence Y-B-C, by selectively separating X and by polymerizing (c), (2) radical polymerization of monomers (a) with the macro radical initiator (II) by separating Y and forming linear block copolymers containing the sequence A-B-C. The block copolymers have the sequences A-B-C, A-B-C-B-A, C-B-A-B-C or A-B-C-B-A-B-C-B-A.

Block (A) is selectively hydrogenated using hydrogen in the presence of a RhCl(P(C6H5)3)3 or RuCl(P(C6H5)3)3 catalyst.Also claimed are: (i) the resulting hydrogenated block copolymer (ii) moulded articles, film or fibres containing the hydrogenated block copolymer.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of graft copolymers (I) by anionic polymerisation of a polymer (A) containing an anionic chain end and a polymer (B) containing a nitrile group in a solvent is claimed. Preferably (A) is a vinyl aromatic based polymer, a block copolymer consisting of a block of vinyl aromatic monomers and a block of conjugated dienes, preferably polystyrene or polystyrene-polybutadiene. (B) is a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile. (B) is titrated with a solution of a organometallic compound, preferably s-butyllithium before mixing with (A) in ethyl benzene.
