Abstract: Preparation of guanidine derivatives comprises reacting calcium cyanamide with an alcohol to form an isourea derivative and reacting the isourea derivative with an amine. Preparation of guanidine derivatives of formula H2N-C(=NH)-N(R )(R ) (I) comprises (a) reacting calcium cyanamide with an alcohol of formula R OH to form an isourea derivative of formula H2N-C(=NH)-OR (II), and (b) reacting (II) with an amine of formula HN(R )(R ) (III), where R = H, 1-20C alkyl, 2-10C alkenyl or 3-8C cycloalkyl; R = 1-20C alkyl, 2-10C alkenyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl, ACOOR , ACONR R , ACN, ASO2R or Ä(CH2)mXÜpÄ(CH2)nYÜqÄ(CH2)oÜrZ; A = 1-20C alkylene; m, n and o = 0-10; p, q and r = 0-50000; X = O or NH; Y = NÄ(CH2)mXÜpÄ(CH2)nYÜqÄ(CH2)oÜrZ; Z = OH or NH2; R = H, 1-20C alkyl, 2-10C alkenyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl, 6-18C aryl, Na, K, Li, Ca, Mg or N(R )4; R , R = H, 1-20C alkyl, 2-10C alkenyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl or 6-18C aryl; R = OR or N(R )2; R = H or 1-20C alkyl; R = H, 1-20C alkyl, 2-10C alkenyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl, 6-18C aryl, Na, K, Li, Ca, Mg or N(R )4; R = H, 1-20C alkyl, 2-10C alkenyl, 3-8C cycloalkyl or 6-18C aryl; and R = 1-20C alkyl.

Abstract: Thermolytic cracking of formamide (I) to HCN and H2O is carried out by introducing superheated (I) gas at 300-480 deg.C under reduced pressure of 1-350 mbar and with 0.1-10 vol.% air into a reactor with a nest of tubes and passing at 450-590 deg.C and an average dwell time of 0.01-0.25 s over highly sintered mouldings, consisting of 50-100 wt.% Al2O3 and 50-0 wt. % SiO2 or over Cr-Ni stainless steel mouldings, which are resistant to high temp. corrosion. (I) is introduced at 300-400 deg.C and 50-150 mbar with 1.0-3.0 vol.% air; and cracked at 500-540 deg.C witha dwell time of 0.01-0.15 s.. The mouldings consist of 85-95 wt.% Al2O3 and 15-5 wt.% SiO2; or of 18-21 wt.% Cr, 9-13 wt.% Ni, 0-3 wt.% and the rest Fe.
