Abstract: Catalysts for ethylene oxide prepn. from ethylene and O2 comprise Ag and alkali metals or their cpds. deposited on a support. The catalysts contain (a) 0.1-2 atom % Na and (b) either 0.05-0.35 atom % K, 0.003-0.25 atom % Rb, 0.0005-0.2 atom % Cs or a corresp. amt. of a mixt. thereof. All percentages are based on the Ag content. The Ag content is pref. 2-12 (esp. 5-10) wt.% based on the wt. of the catalyst. The catalysts are pref. prepd. by impregnating the support with an aq. soln. of an Ag complex salt (e.g. an Ag-amine carboxylate) and suitable alkali metal cpds. (e.g. hydroxides), steaming the resulting composite until the Ag cpd. decomposes, and calcining the product at 100-400 degrees C to constant wt. Other standard methods can also be used. The catalysts have higher activity and selectivity than conventional Ag catalysts promoted with alkali(ne earth) metals, and/or have a longer life.

Abstract: Catalytic manufacture of melamine from urea by thermal cracking of urea and converting the resulting cracked gases to melamine in the presence of catalysts. The thermal decomposition is carried out in a fluidized bed, the necessary heat being applied by heat exchangers located in the fluidized bed. Conversion of the cracked gases to melamine is effected either in the same fluidized bed, in which case the fluidized solid consists of conventional catalysts, or in a reaction zone remote from said fluidized bed. In the latter case, the solids fluidized consist of catalytically inactive particles, the conversion being carried out in the presence of catalysts in said reaction zone remote from the fluidized bed. In both cases, the urea is fed to the fluidized bed at a point above the heat exchangers.

Abstract: Urea is recovered from the off-gas obtained in a melamine sythesis from urea in the gas phase and in the presence of catalysts and which has been freed from melamine by fractional condensation at from 150 DEG to 200 DEG C., by bringing said off-gas into intimate contact with a melt of urea or a melt of urea and its thermal decomposition products, both of which are kept up to 50 DEG C. above their melting temperature. Thermal decomposition products which may be present in the urea melt are biuret, triuret, cyanuric acid, ammeline, ammelide, melamine or melamine cyanurate. The presence of 20-25% biuret (obtained by blowing with CO2) is preferred, since this depresses the melting point and allows a very cool melt to be used. Portions of the melt are preferably drawn off after use and passed to the melamine synthesis reactor.

Pref. zeolites are of the pentasil type (esp. aluminosilicates, borosilicates or iron silicates), or are Al silicate zeolites of the faujasite, erionite or offretite type. In the formulae R1, R2, R3 = H, (cyclo)alkyl, aryl, alkoxy or aralkyl; X = (CR4R5)m; R4, R5 have the meaning of R1; m = 1-12; R6, R7, R8, R9 = H or an alkyl gp. unbranched in the alpha-position. Pref. reactants (I) are ethylene diamine or propylene diamine. The molar ratio of amine:olefin is 1:0.05-7. The zeolite catalyst is pref. doped with a transition metal and/or a noble metal and/or a rare earth, or with an alkali(ne earth) metal.
