    Abstract: Methods and compositions for detection of microbial contaminants in peritoneal dialysis solutions are provided. A novel cause of aseptic peritonitis is provided—aseptic peritonitis associated with gram positive microbial contamination of a dialysis solution. Peptidoglycan is a major component of a gram positive bacterial cell wall and thus can serve as a marker for gram positive bacteria. In this regard, testing for peptidoglycans can be utilized to effectively prevent peritonitis in patients that use the peritoneal dialysis solutions, such as peritoneal dialysis solutions that contain a glucose polymer including an icodextrin and the like.

    Abstract: Icodextrin-based solutions and methods of making same that can be used during medical therapy, such as dialysis therapy are provided. The icodextrin-based solution at least includes a first solution containing icodextrin at a pH ranging from about 1.5 to about 5.0 and a buffer solution at a pH ranging from about 7.0 to about 12.0 that are so constructed and arranged allowing the icodextrin-based solution to be mixed prior to infusion into a patient. The icodextrin-based solutions of the present invention can be made at physiologic pH and with minimal glucose degradation products.

    Abstract: A system for dialysis is disclosed. An example peritoneal dialysis system includes a peritoneal dialysis machine including a pumping mechanism, and a sensor configured to measure a property of peritoneal dialysis fluid. The peritoneal dialysis system also includes a disposable cassette operable with the peritoneal dialysis machine. The disposable cassette includes a fluid source inlet for accepting fluid from a fluid source and a fluid flow path in fluid communication with the fluid source inlet. The fluid flow path includes a pump chamber operable with the pumping mechanism to pump fluid through the fluid flow path. The disposable cassette also includes a concentrate inlet for fluidly communicating concentrate to the fluid flow path, and a sensor chamber located along the fluid flow path and operable with the sensor. The sensor is configured to provide feedback to the peritoneal dialysis machine for mixing the concentrate for forming peritoneal dialysis fluid.

    Abstract: A peritoneal dialysis solution that is biochemically balanced to correct metabolic acidosis associated with chronic renal failure in a more physiological manner. The peritoneal dialysis solution has a physiological pH, e.g. pH of 70 to 74 and contains bicarbonate at a concentration that is found in normal blood. Additionally, the solution contains carbon dioxide at a partial pressure that is similar to partial pressure of carbon dioxide found in normal blood. The peritoneal dialysis solution also contains a weak acid with a pKa of less than 5.0.
