    Abstract: Prepn. of 3-aminomethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexylamine (isophorone diamine (IPDA)) from 3-cyano-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexanone (isophorone nitrile (IPN)) comprises: (a) partially converting IPN in presence or absence of an iminating catalyst with NH3 into 3-cyano-3,5,5-trimethyl cyclohexane imine; and (b) hydrogenating the reaction mixt. from (a) by adding a 1-3C alcohol using a solid bed hydrogenation catalyst on a Raney-Co catalyst at 50-150 deg C under a pressure of 3-10 MPa. The novelty is that the hydrogenation catalyst is produced by: (i) intensively mixing a powdered Co-alloy and a powdered Co as binder, where the Co-alloy contains Co and opt. promoters and/or leachable alloying components of Al, Zn and Si in wt. ratio of 30-70 and 75-25; (ii) sintering the powdered mixt. by a mechanically stable moulding of 1.3-5.5 g./cm density, up to 0.5 cm /g. pore volume (water adsorption) and a less than 1 m /g. BET surface area (DIN 66132); and (iii) activating the sintered moulding by partially leaching the leachable alloying components using an alkali metal hydroxide lye.

    Abstract: A formed metal solid-bed catalyst, consisting entirely of catalyst alloy (and possibly promoters) with a total pore vol. of 0.1-0.6 ml/g and with a surface shell 0.1-2.0 mm thick which is activated by complete or partial leaching of an extractable alloy component (I). Also claimed is a process for the production of thE catalyst . Preferably the catalyst metal is nickel, cobalt, copper and/or iron, and component (I) is aluminium, zinc or silicon. The catalyst may also contain up to 15 wt% chromium, iron, cobalt, tantalum, molybdenum and/or titanium as promoters.
