Abstract: A removable cigarette (224') is manufactured for use in a smoking system which includes a lighter which has electrical heating means disposed in permanent cavity for delivering a flavored tobacco response to a smoker. To manufacture the cigarette a carrier web (259') is provided which has regions (261) of tobacco flavor material. Adhesive regions (261A) are applied from an adhesive applying station (327) to the surface of the carrier web (259') to form spaced regions of adhesive (261A) in between spaced regions of flavor material (261). A filter station (329) attaches filters (333,335) to the adhesive regions (261A) and a wrapping station (337) wraps the web (259') around the filters (333,335) to form a continuous rod of alternating regions of filter and tobacco flavor material. Finally, individual removable cigarettes (224') are formed by severing the continuous rod at a severing station (339).

Abstract: A carbonaceous heat source comprising metal oxides and methods for making such heat source are provided. The heat source has an ignition temperature substantially lower than conventional carbonaceous heat sources, while at the same time produces virtually no carbon monoxide upon combustion. The heat source is prepared by pre-forming the carbon and binder materials into a desired shape, and then treating the shape with a sol containing metal oxide precursors. The metal oxide precursors are deposited in the pre-formed carbon shape. Further treatment converts the deposited metal oxide precursors into metal oxide.

Abstract: A cylindrical tube is provided of a mechanically strong and flexible electrical conductor such as a metal and has a plurality of separated regions. An electrically insulating layer such as a ceramic is applied on the outer surface except for one exposed portion. Electrically resistive heaters are then applied to the insulated regions and are electrically connected at one end to the underlying electrical conducting region. The electrical conductor is connected to the negative terminal of a power source. The other end of all the heaters are adapted to be connected to the positive terminal of the source. Accordingly, an electrically resistive heating circuit is formed wherein the tube serves as a common for all of the heating elements. The tubular heater can comprise an exposed end hub with a plurality of blades extending therefrom. Each blade can have an individual heater deposited thereon. Alternatively, every other blade can have a heater deposited thereon. The blades having no heater function as barriers to minimize outward escape of generated vapors. These barrier blades also function as heat sinks for the heaters on adjacent blades.

Abstract: A heating element for use within a smoking device which, without burning, heats a flavorgenerating medium within the device to produce an aerosol, vapor, or flavor, which the consumer may inhale. More particularly, an electrically-powered heating element having a plurality of discrete resistive heating segments, only one of which is active at any given time. In a preferred embodiment, the heating element is contained within the device so that the individual heating segments of the element are adjacent to a flavor-generating medium. As each segment of the heating element is provided with power, the flavor-generating medium adjacent to that segment is heated, but is not burned. This heating causes the flavor-generating medium to produce a flavor, aerosol, or vapor, which the consumer of the device may inhale.
