Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To readily obtain the subject compound useful for an agrochemical, etc., in a high yield without a specific apparatus and without light irradiation, by oxidizing an α-hydroxycarboxylic acid with hydrogen peroxide in a specific solvent in the presence of a bromine catalyst at a prescribed temperature. SOLUTION: (A) A compound of the formula [R is a (cyclo)alkyl, a (substituted) aryl or an aralkyl; R is a 1-4C alkyl] is oxidized with (D) hydrogen peroxide in (B) a water-immiscible solvent (e.g. an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon) in the presence of (C) bromine or hydrogen bromide at 30 deg.C (preferably 30-80 deg.C). Preferably the reaction is carried out by using 0.05-0.4 time mol of the component C and 0.7-1.5 times mol of the component D based on 1 mol of the component A, feeding the components B and C, heating the components to a fixed temperature, feeding 10% of the component A, then supplying the component A and the component D for 1-3 hours so as to approximately simultaneously finish the supply and aging the reaction product to complete the reaction.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To separate and recover the subject compounds useful as an important intermediate of a perfume by selectively crystallizing out an alkali metal salt of ω-hydroxy-(ω-3)-ketofatty acid from a mixture containing an alkali metal salt of a long chain dicarboxylic acid, and then performing a solid-liquid separation. SOLUTION: This alkali metal salt of ω-hydroxy-(ω-3)-ketofatty acid of formula I [(k) is 9-13 integer; M is an alkali metal], useful as an important intermediate of a large cyclic lactone-based perfume, is separated and recovered by selectively crystallizing the compound of formula I from a mixture containing the compound of formula I and an alkali metal salt of a long chain dicarboxylic acid of formula II [(m) is 9-13 integer], and then performing a solid liquid separation to a cake and a filtrate liquid.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce D-(-)-tartaric acid with industrially advantage by culturing a microorganism which is capable of assimilating L-(+)-tartaric acid, but substantially not assimilating D-(-)-tartaric acid in a medium containing DL-tartaric acid. CONSTITUTION:A microorganism in Cryptococcus, Trichosporon, or Klebsiella, capable of assimilating L-(+)-tartaric acid, but substantially not assimilating D-(-)-tartaric acid, is cultured in a medium containing DL-tartaric acid to effect asymmetric decomposition of L-(+)-tartaric acid. Then, remaining D-(-)- tartaric acid is isolated and collected from the culture mixture. An example of the microorganism is Cryptococcus laurentii ATCC 36832. The concentration of DL-tartaric acid in the medium is usually 1-300g/l, preferably 30-150g/l.
