    Abstract: PURPOSE: To measure an absorption spectrum efficiently by penetrating the middle part of an optical fiber into a sample, transferring spectrum information to a detector, and using the phenomenon of an attenuated total reflection factor. CONSTITUTION: Beams from a source 17 generate beams 22 modulated by an interferometer 15. A lens 25a directs beams 22 toward one edge of a fiber 27, and a lens 25b captures light appearing from the other edge of the fiber 27 and directs it toward a detector 20. The fiber 27 has a first part 30a and a second part 30b at both edge sides and third part 32 at a middle. The third part 32 exposes a core and other parts 30a and 30b do not expose any core. Also, a course is provided for capturing light from the edge at the side of the lens 26b of the fiber 27 efficiently and for directing it toward the detector 20. In this case, the middle part 32 of the fiber 27 is penetrated through a sample 12, and the spectrum information is transferred to the detector 20. By using the phenomenon of attenuated total reflection factor, the absorption spectrum of the sample 12 can be measured easily and accurately.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently and accurately inducing an impulse response of an interesting sample. SOLUTION: At each of a series of steps in a FT-IR spectroscope, an interesting sample is illuminated with an excitation pulse with the radiation of an excitation pulse and an acoustic signal having dependence O2 (t) on time generated from the excitation pulse is captured to calculate a Fourier transform Os of Os (t). At each of the series of steps in the FT-IR spectroscope, a reference sample is illuminated by an excitation pulse of an analysis radiation and an acoustic signal having dependence OR(t) on time generated from the excitation pulse is captured to calculate the Fourier transform OR of OR(t). At each step, an inverse Fourier transform of a ratio of Os /OR is calculated to determine a series of values s(ti ) which are applied for a series of times i. The values s(ti ) thus obtained represent impulse responses s(t) of the interesting sample for a mixture with a light frequency corresponding to given delay values. An interference chart is processed for providing a photoacoustic spectrum.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a two-dimensional electrophoresis apparatus which supplies separability far higher than that obtained by a one-dimensional separation as a useful technology for separating a complex protein mixture. SOLUTION: A strip gel and a slab gel which may be water-expandable are combined on a common support for two-dimensional electrophoresis. The strip gel is separated from the slab gel by a fluid-impermeable and electrically insulative barrier. The barrier is preferably a wall which surrounds and forms a reservoir for containing the strip gel. A first dimension separation is carried out by pouring a liquid sample and a buffer solution into the reservoir to expand the gel, loading the sample into it, and feeding a current to the reservoir. The barrier which is easily breakably connected with the support is detached, so that the strip gel comes into contact with the slab gel to carry out a second dimension separation.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method enabling continuous measurements for the content of saccharified hemoglobin in blood without regenerating an ion exchange column between a previous measuring sample and a coming measuring sample. SOLUTION: A boronate-affinitive absorption column 23 is utilized as an analyzer column. A series of hemolytic samples 11 is injected in a carrier liquid at 12, 13 every predetermined time interval. An absorbance is measured by a spectrophotometer 21 with the light of a wavelength absorbed by the hemoglobin before and after a liquid flow 14 including the samples pass through the column. Two measuring values are compared with each other, thereby to calculate the content of saccharified hemoglobin. Accordingly, 100 or more samples can be analyzed without detaching/regenerating the column.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve cataphoresis separation by receiving the support of a computer and utilizing a knowledge based on calibration data that are obtained by separating a gigantic molecule with a known size under conditions for optimizing separation. CONSTITUTION: A system 100 consisting of a computer system 150, a contour fixing homogeneous electric field(CHEF) mapper 120, and a cataphoresis device 130 operates in a complete automatic mode. A user inputs the minimum and maximum fragment sizes of a gigantic molecule to be separated, especially DNA. Related knowledge base is provided, thus determining optimized parameters of a forward voltage gradient, a backward voltage gradient, a voltage gradient, an angle, an initial switch time, a final switch time, and a run period. The mapper 120 can directly calibrate the device 130 using the parameters, thus separating the maximum gigantic molecule.
