Abstract: The parent patent described the prepn. of N- and O-substd. alpha-amino- alpha, alpha-dioxy acetonitriles of formula (R'O)2C(CN)NR22 (I) (where R' is an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic gp.; and each R2 is an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic gp., or both R2 together with the N atom to which they are attached form a heterocyclic ring) from N- and O-substd. alpha-amino- alpha, alpha-dioxy carbonium salts. In this addn. (I) can be prepd. by reacting N- and O-substd. alpha-amino- alpha, alpha-dioxymethyl cpds. of formula (R'O)2C(R5)NR22 with acyl cyanides of formula R6 (CO)CN (III) (where R5 is OR' or (R2)2N; and R6 is an aromatic gp. when R5 is OR', or R6 is an aliphatic cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic gp. when R5 is R22N-. (I) are obtd. in good yields and purity and are intermediates in the prepn. of dyes, imino orthoesters, orthocarbonic acid esters, guanidinium salts and pesticides.

Abstract: 5-Nitrobenzo-1,2-dithiole-3-thione of formula (I) is prepd. by reacting a 2-halo-5-nitrobenzyl halide of formula (II) with sulphur in the presence of a base at 20-100 degrees C, as follows: (where each X is independently halogen). (I) has fungicidal activity and is useful as an intermediate for plant-protection agents, pharmaceuticals and dyes. The process is simple and gives high yields (e.g. 70-90%). The starting material is pref. 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzyl chloride (IIa), which can be prepd. by nitrating 2-chlorobenzyl chloride. The base is pref. a tert. amine or an alkali metal alcoholate. The reaction is pref. effected in an inert solvent, esp. an alcohol or ether.
