    Abstract: An aliphatic diol mixt. (I) contains 70-95 wt.% HOCH2.CHPr.CHEt.CH2OH (II) and 5-30 wt.% HOCH2.CHEt.CH2.CHEt.CH2OH (III). (I) is prepd. by hydroformulation of CH3.CH2.CH2.CH:CHEt.CH2OH (IV) with CO and H2 at 60-130, pref. 70-120 degrees C and 30-300, pref. 150-250 atm. in the presence of Rh carbonyl complexes (V); and hydrogenation of the resultant mixt. of 2-hydroxy-3-propyl-4-ethyl-tetrahydrofuran (VI) and 3,4-diethyltetrahydropyran (VII) in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst at elevated temp. (50-250, esp. 60-200 degrees C) and elevated pressure (20-300, esp. 50-200 atm.). (V) pref. is used in conjunction with a tert. organic phosphine (VIII), esp. PPh3 or P(C6H3Me2-p)3, in an amt. of 3-50, pref. 5-50 mole (VIII/g-atom Rh. (I) is used in the prodn. of polyurethanes and polyesters, giving polymers of low crystallinity and hence better toughness and plasticisity.

    Abstract: is split off from a cpd. of formula: R4CH(OCHO)-C triple bond C-CR1R2R3 (where R1 is H, 1-6C alkyl or OCOR5; R2-R5 are H or 1-6C alkyl; and when R1 = OCOR5, R2 = H) by contacting at 140-260 degrees C with a finely-divided gp. Ib metal (pref. Cu) and/or Cd or Zn and/or Ni, Pd or Pb or Pt or a cpd. of these metals which liberate the free metal under the reaction conditions. The prodts. are alkynyl formates, alkynyl alkanoates, alkynes and the corresp. isomeric allenes. The prodts. are intermediates, e.g. for insecticides, acaricides, corrosion inhibitors, vitamin E and plant growth promoters.
