    Abstract: The invention relates to hydrophobically modified polymers, which contain vinylamine units or ethylenimine units and can be obtained by reacting: (a) polymers containing vinylamine units or ethylenimine units with; (b) compoun ds of formula (I) R - A - (EO, PO, BuO)n - X, in which: R represents C4 to C26 alkyl or C4 to C26 alkenyl; A represents O, NH, COO; EO represents an ethyle ne oxide unit; PO represents a propylene oxide unit, BuO represents a butylene oxide unit, n ranges from 1 to 250, and; X represents a functional group tha t can be covalently bonded to an OH group.
