    Abstract: A process for preparation of paper, pasteboard, or cardboard involving cutting of the paper pulp, addition of microparticles of cationic polymer, and a finely divided inorganic component after the last cutting step and before pulp swelling, dewatering of the pulp, and sheet formation and drying of the sheets is new.     Abstract: The invention relates to hydrophobically modified polymers, which contain vinylamine units or ethylenimine units and can be obtained by reacting: (a) polymers containing vinylamine units or ethylenimine units with; (b) compoun ds of formula (I) R - A - (EO, PO, BuO)n - X, in which: R represents C4 to C26 alkyl or C4 to C26 alkenyl; A represents O, NH, COO; EO represents an ethyle ne oxide unit; PO represents a propylene oxide unit, BuO represents a butylene oxide unit, n ranges from 1 to 250, and; X represents a functional group tha t can be covalently bonded to an OH group. The invention also relates to a method for producing hydrophobically modified polymers, which contain vinylamine units or ethylenimine units, by reacting polymers containing vinylamine units or ethylenimine units with at least one hydrophobing agent of formula (I), and to the use of polymers obtained in this manner as an additi ve to paper pulp during the production of paper.
