Abstract: The production of acrylic acid (I) and/or its esters comprises; (a) catalytic gas-phase oxidation of propene and/or acrolein to give a gaseous product containing (I), (b) absorption of the reaction product with a solvent, (c) distillation in a column to give crude (I) and solvent, (d) purification of (I) by crystallisation and optionally (e) esterification of crystallised (I). Also claimed is an apparatus for the process, comprising reactor(s) for stage (a), an absorption column, a distillation column, dynamic crystalliser(s) and static crystalliser(s), and container(s) for intermediate storage.

Abstract: A process for purifying (meth)acrylic acid by phase separation techniques comprises the following steps: (a) a mixture containing (meth)acrylic acid is separated into distinct phases in the presence of an organic solvent, with the composition of the (meth)acrylic acid-rich phase remaining essentially unchanged, and this acid-rich phase is separated; (b) the remaining phase from step (a) is separated into indistinct phases; and (c) one of the phases from step (b) is returned to step (a). Also claimed is preparation of (meth)acrylic acid. Preferably in step (c) the acid-rich phase is returned to step (a). 1-100 (100) wt.% of the phase remaining from step (a) is used in step (b). Pure end product is added to steps (a) and (b). Step (a) involves crystallisation, freezing or sublimation, preferably static and/or dynamic crystallisation, and most preferably a combined static and dynamic crystallisation in which the residue from the dynamic crystallisation is added to the static crystallisation step and the crystallised product from the static crystallisation is returned to the dynamic crystallisation.

Abstract: A process for preparing acrylic acid or methacrylic acid comprises preparing a gaseous product mixture having essentially the composition of a reaction mixture of the catalytic gas phase oxidation of C3-/C4-alkanes, -alkenes, -alkanols and/or -alkanals and/or precursors thereof to form acrylic acid or methacrylic acid. The product is removed from the gaseous product mixture by a process comprising the following steps:(a) condensing said gaseous product mixture,(b) crystallizing acrylic acid or methacrylic acid from the solution obtained in step (a),(c) removing the resulting crystals from the mother liquor, and(d) recycling at least a portion of said mother liquor from step (c) into step (a).

Abstract: In a process for production of acrylic acid by catalytic gas-phase oxidation of a 3C feedstock, the gaseous product is worked up by condensation followed by crystallization of acrylic acid by evaporation under vacuum, both the mother liquor from crystallization and the evaporated solution being at least partly recycled to the condensation stage. The production of acrylic acid comprises: (a) catalytic gas-phase oxidation of 3C alkanes, alkenes, alkanols and/or alkanals and/or precursors thereof to acrylic acid, (b) condensation of the gaseous product mixture, (c) crystallization of acrylic acid by partial evaporation of the solution obtained under vacuum, (d) separation of the crystals from the mother liquor, (e) recycling at least part of the mother liquor from (d) to stage (b) and (f) recycling at least part of the evaporated solution from (c) to stage (b).
