Abstract: Use of optically active 1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylates as dopes in liquid-crystal mixtures, liquid-crystal mixtures containing these compounds, and novel, optically active 1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylates. Optically active, mesogenic 1,3-dioxolane-4-carboxylates are suitable as dopes in liquid-crystal mixtures. They result in liquid-crystalline ferroelectric phases having short switching times and in electroclinic phases having large electroclinic coefficients. Their particular advantage is that they induce a helix of very large pitch, meaning that helix compensation by further dopes is unnecessary. In addition, 1,3- dioxolane-4-carboxylates exhibit high UV stability. The 1,3- dioxolane-4-carboxylates of the present invention are of the following general Formula (I):

The meanings of the symbols in the general formula are: R?1 is constructed similarly to the part of the general formula to the right of X or an alkyl or alkylene residue which may be substituted; R?2, R?3, R?4 = H or alkyl (R?4 may also be alkenyl) which may also be substituted [R?2, R?3 together with the C(2) of the dioxolane ring may be a cycloaliphate or a keto group]; j, l, n = zero, 1 or 2 and k, m = zero or 1 provided that if k = zero, n = zero also, if n = zero, m = zero also and l j + l + n 3; -A?1, -A?2, -A?3 = aromatic, heterocyclic or aliphatic ring system; -M?1,- M?2 = -CO-O, -O-CO, -CH2?CH2?, -CH=CH, -CH2?O, -OCH2?, -C=C and X = CH=CH, CH2?-CH2?. The special advantage of the compounds with the general formula (I) is that they can induce a high twisting capacity in a cholesteric phase without substantially affecting in the smectic C* phase the value of the spontaneous polarisation already in the mixture. Abstract: Optically active 1,3-dioxolane derivates of the general formula which carry a mesogenic radical in the 4-position are suitable as dopes in - in particular ferroelectric - liquid-crystal mixtures. The symbols in the general formula have the following meanings: R has a structure analogous to the moiety of the general formula on the right of X or is an alkyl or alkylene radical, which may be substituted, R , R and R are H or alkyl (R is alternatively alkenyl), which may also be substituted [R and R , together with the C(2) of the dioxolane ring, may alternatively be cycloaliphatic or keto groups], j, l and n are zero, 1 or 2, and k and m are zero or 1, with the proviso that n is zero if k is zero, m is zero if n is zero, and 1 , -A and -A are an aromatic, heterocyclic or aliphatic ring system, -M and -M are -CO-O, -O-CO, -CH2CH2, -CH=CH, -CH2O, -OCH2 or -C IDENTICAL C and X is O, S or O-CO-O. The particular advantage of the compounds of the general formula (I) is that they are able to induce a high twisting power in the cholesteric phase, but without significantly affecting the magnitude of the spontaneous polarisation already present in the mixture in the smectic C phase. They are therefore suitable for pitch compensation, in particular for ferroelectric liquid-crystal mixtures.
