    Abstract: A composition comprising a hydrocarbon polymer having M n ranging from 20,000 to about 500,000, when the polymer is not a star polymer, and up to about GPC peak molecular weight of 4,000,000 when the polymer is a star polymer having attached thereto pendant groups Aa and Bb wherein each A is independently a member of the group of formula -Q-Kk wherein each Q is independently an aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon group, each K is independently a member select ed from the group consisting of amide groups, nitrile groups, ester groups and carboxylic acid groups, and each k is independently a number ranging from 1 to about 3, and when k 2 2, groups -K on adjacent carbon atoms, taken together, may constitute a succinimide group, and a is 0 or a number ranging from 1 to about 5 0; and each B is independently a member of the group of formula: wherein each X is independently O, S, or NRb, each Rb is independently H, NH2, hydrocarbyl, hydroxyhydrocarbyl, or aminohydrocarbyl, each s is independently I or 2, and each Z is independently a hydrocarbyl group, optionally substituted with one or more carboxylic acid groups or amide groups, each Ra is independently an ethylene group, a propylene group, which groups optionally have hydrocarbyl or hydroxyhydrocarbyl substituents, or wherein J is H, SH, NH2, or OH, and tautomers thereof; and b is a number ranging from 1 to about 50 with the proviso that when X is O, then b ranges from 2 to about 50.

    Abstract: A block copolymer of a hydrophobic block of one or more hydrophobic monomers and a hydrophilic block of one or more hydrophilic monomers is prepared by polymerizing a hydrophobic monomer to prepare the hydrophobic block, using a free radical polymerization process using a stable free radical agent, preservin g a stabilized active polymerization site on the hydrophobic block; adding a hydrophilic monomer to the stabilized active hydrophobic block; and further reac ting the mixture to effect polymerization of the hydrophilic monomer. The polymerization of the hydrophilic monomer is conducted in an amidic solvent in which the hydrophobic block and the hydrophilic monomer are soluble.

    Abstract: A compsn. comprising: (a) oil-soluble, olefin-based polymer(s); (b) oil-soluble polymer(s) having N functionality, (a) and (b) combined in a liq. nonpolar oleophilic medium exhibit incompatibility evidenced by phase separation; (c) sufficient hydrocarbyl substd. hydroxyaromatic material(s) contg. at least 24C to reduce the incompatibility of (a) and (b); and (d) a liq. nonpolar oleophilic medium. Also claimed are (1) A lubricant prepd. by mixing the above compsn., (d) being present in a concentrate-forming amt., with an oil of lubricating viscosity. (2) Improving the mutual compatibility of (a) and (b) comprising combining with a mixt. of (a) and (b) in a liq. nonpolar oleophilic medium sufficient hydrocarbyl substd. hydroxyaromatic material contg. at least 24C.
