    Abstract: To reduce the size and weight of an optical scanner, the present invention provides a mirrorless beam scanning unit. In some embodiments, the light emitter itself moves back and forth, and in other embodiments the objective lens reciprocates laterally in front of the light emitter. For example, a flexible support structure, such as one or more strips of mylar, movably mounts the objective lens in front of the light emitter. The objective lens is laterally reciprocated in response to a motive force, for example as might be applied by a combination of a permanent magnet coupled to the objective lens and a fixedly mounted electromagnet driven by an alternating current signal. Reciprocation of the objective lens during emission of light by the light emitter causes the light to scan a surface, such as a surface bearing a bar code label.

    Abstract: A self service shopping system includes electronic shelf labels 114 communicating with a central computer 110 and portable shopping terminals 116 in short range communication with the electronic shelf labels. A customer records purchases by activating the terminal in the vicinity of the shelf label. Identification data may be sent from the terminal to the shelf label to be relayed to the central computer to record a purchase. Alternatively data can be sent from the shelf label to the terminal to record a purchase. A customer service station 118 and a cashier station 120 may also be provided. The communication links may be by radio or optical means.

    Abstract: The method and apparatus of this invention facilitate operation of a bar code reader over a wider range of working angle and for a wider range of bar code densities. The invention includes improved optics and sensing elements. The optics and sensing elements and/or the associated circuitry are arranged to provide two channels of data derived form the scanned bar code. The two channels have differing resolutions. Analysis of the data from the two channels provides a single decoded result. As the working angle and density vary at least one of the resolutions will be appropriate for sensing all or most of the bar coded data. The data from the channel producing a valid result can be used, or if neither channel produces a valid result by itself, data from each channel can be analyzed and valid portions of the data from both channels combined to produce the single decoded result.

    Abstract: A scanning device for reading indicia of differing light reflectivity, including bar code or matrix array symbols, has a single light emitter, such as a laser or light emitting diode, for generating a scanning light beam to visually illuminate sequential portions of the indicia. A sensor, such as a charge coupled or other solid state imaging device, simultaneously detects light reflected from portions of the indicia and generates an electrical signal representative of the spacial intensity variations the portions of the indicia. The scanning device may also include an ambient light sensor, range finder, a second light emitter for use only in aiming or orienting the scanning device. A photodetector may also be provided to separately detect one symbol virtually simultaneous with the detection of another symbol by the sensor or to provide dual modalities. A method for reading indicia is also provided.

    Abstract: LASER SCANNING SYSTEM COMPACT BAR CODE SCANNING MODULE WITH SHOCK PROTECTION Optical scanning of barcode symbols is carried out first in an aim mode wherein the symbol is scanned using a first scan pattern that is relatively small and dense so as to be visible to the user, and thereafter using a second, larger, more robust scan pattern for decoding. The preferred scanner module has a scanner mirror which is mounted to a bracket by way of a leaf spring, allowing the mirror to oscillate in one direction. This is hung from a stationary chassis by means of two strips of mylar film, which are themselves protected against mechanical shock by pins which pass through holes in the bracket. The pins provide accurate alignment of the bracket with respect to the chassis.
