    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the mass measuring system, which automatically detects the property of a paper sheet and automatically adjusts the setting of a paper- sheet conveying mechanism. SOLUTION: This system 140 includes an actuator 141, a paper-sheet-position sensor 142 and a touch-sense sensor system 200. The actuator 142 applies known force on a paper sheet 150, moves the paper sheet 150 and passes the paper sheet to the paper-sheet-position sensor 142. The paper-sheet-position sensor 142 measures the speed of the paper sheet 150 at each point. The paper sheet 150 passes the touch-sense sensor system 200. Thus, the friction coefficient of the paper sheet is measured. A controller can measure the mass of the paper sheet 150 by using these measured values. This is utilized, and the performance of the paper-sheet carrying path in a copying machine or the like is changed.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical plate including columnar structures which each have the refractive index larger in itself than at its border by filling a removed part area so that the core area refractive index is larger than the cladding area refractive index. SOLUTION: A columnar structure forming the core area 64 is extended substantially from a light entrance surface 30 to a light exit surface 32. At the time of use, light enters the core area 64 normally from the light entrance surface 30, travels in the core area 64, and exits normally from the light exit 32. The core area 64 has the larger refractive index enough to internally reflect the light entering the core area 64 than the cladding area 66. Namely, the refractive index of the glass, etc., in the cladding area 66 is made smaller than that of the core area 64 to cause total internal reflection in the core area 64, and an etching part is filled for the purpose.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system to optimize the sheet handing speed, or the like by detecting the characteristics of the paper sheet, and regulating the setting of a sheet carrying mechanism based on the detected characteristics. SOLUTION: A paper sheet characteristics sensor system 100a measures the curl and the thickness of the paper sheet using two paper sheet characteristics sensors 110. Each paper sheet characteristics sensor 110 comprises a member 112, a base 114, and a measurement circuit. Two members 112 are arranged opposite to each other, and both members 112 are brought into contact with a sheet 116 when the paper sheet 116 is passed therethrough. Each member 112 is connected to the base 114 including the measurement circuit. Each measurement circuit measures the displacement of a related member.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To substantially eliminate glare related to specular reflection by providing a thin shape matching layer of encapsulation material over the entire surface of a display element group. SOLUTION: A group of display elements 21 is arranged while its surface layer is partially buried by a material layer 22, and a thin shape matching layer 23 made from encapsulation material covers the exposed surfaces of the display elements. The thickness of the layer 23 must be thinner than the width of the elements 21, the surface of the layer 23 does not consequently become planar but becomes a shape along the shapes of the elements 21 to produce the paper-shaped external appearance of a display device 20 due to the layer 23. The layer 23 made from the encapsulation material forms a rough top surface, and incident light 27 is reflected against the layer 23 to be diffused. Because reflected light 28 to be diffused is scattered from the layer 23 not to form glare, an observer at the position I can look at the device 20 comfortably without having to move the head.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of improving a gylicon sheet which is one of electric paper. SOLUTION: This invention relates to an electric paper sheet using a pattern of conductive electric charge holding islands 306 mounted on an external side of a 1st plane 302 of a thin layer used for capsulizing a gylicon sheet 300. A 2nd capsule layer 304 can also be coated with a conductive material or made of a conductive material, but does not need to be patterned. The gylicon sheet 300 and two sheets of the capsule layer 302, 304 constitute a sheet of gylicon electric paper on which a picture can repeatedly be written or erased. The electric charge holding islands 306 where the 1st capsule layer 302 has been patterned receives electric charges from an external electric charge moving device. Also after the electric charge moving device is removed, the conductive electric charge holding islands 306 holds the electric charges, and applies an electric field to the gylicon sheet 300 enough to cause a change in the picture.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and mechanism to ensure the quality control of printed biological assays. SOLUTION: Various bio-fluids put fully in a multiple ejector system comprising a plurality of individual fluid drop ejectors are printed on a base board 172 as fluid drops 174. Each bio-fluid includes at least a carrier fluid, a bio- substance used in the test, and a marker such as fluorescent dyes. When the biological assays 170 formed from bio-fluid drops are printed, it is scanned by a scanner 176 capable of sensing the marker, and a signature output signal for respective fluid drop is determined. This signature output represents a signal from respective fluorescent marker included in the bio-fluid. Then the signature output determined by the scanning is compared with a predicted signal output for the bio-fluid put fully in the corresponding fluid drop ejector, and thus quality control is conducted.
