Abstract: Optically active tetrahydrofuran-2-carboxylic acid esters containing a mesogenic molecular building block are suitable as dopes in liquid-crystal mixtures. They result in liquid-crystalline ferroelectric phases having short switching times and in electroclinic phases having high electroclinic coefficients. A further advantage is that they induce a helix of very low pitch, so they are also suitable for helix compensation in LC mixtures. The compounds are symbolised by the general formula in which the symbols and indices essentially have the following meanings: R = alkyl/alkenyl or tetrahydrofurancarbonyloxy or -thio; j, l and n = zero, 1 or 2; k and m = zero or 1; -A , -A and -A = phenylene, cycloalkylene or corresponding N-, O- or S-containing heterocycles; -M and -M = bridges, such as -CO-O-, -OCH2- or -CH=CH-; and X = O or S.

When such a FLC mixture is used, displays which have been shock-damaged can be regenerated by applying a suitable electric field for a short period of time.

Abstract: Ferroelectric liq crystalline (FLC) mixts (I) contg at least one complex ligand (II) for ions are used in (I)-light valves (ie, devices which with electrical switching change their optical transmission properties so that intensity of incident, and opt re-reflected, light is modulated eg, watch and pocket calculator displays, liq crystal in office automation or TV, also light shutters in copying machines, printers, welding goggles, goggles for 3-dimensional viewing, and spacial light modulators.) (II) is electrically neutral cpd.. (II) complexes cations and has at least 2 N and/or 0 and/or S and/or P donor centres. (II) is medio- or macro-cyclic cpd.. (I) contains 0.01-10 mol% cryptand, coronand, or podand as (II). (I) contains several different (II) for different ions. Light valve is in mutliplex process-regulationed switching device. Light valve has SSFLC cell with layer thickness 1-10 microns and (I) has Sc phase in working temp range. Liq crystal switching and display devices contg (I), support plates, electrodes, at least one orientation layer, and opt additional auxiliary layers. ADVANTAGE - Optical hysteresis is much reduced, formation off ghost images is avoided.

Abstract: Optically active 1,3-dioxolane derivates of the general formula which carry a mesogenic radical in the 4-position are suitable as dopes in - in particular ferroelectric - liquid-crystal mixtures. The symbols in the general formula have the following meanings: R has a structure analogous to the moiety of the general formula on the right of X or is an alkyl or alkylene radical, which may be substituted, R , R and R are H or alkyl (R is alternatively alkenyl), which may also be substituted [R and R , together with the C(2) of the dioxolane ring, may alternatively be cycloaliphatic or keto groups], j, l and n are zero, 1 or 2, and k and m are zero or 1, with the proviso that n is zero if k is zero, m is zero if n is zero, and 1 , -A and -A are an aromatic, heterocyclic or aliphatic ring system, -M and -M are -CO-O, -O-CO, -CH2CH2, -CH=CH, -CH2O, -OCH2 or -C IDENTICAL C and X is O, S or O-CO-O. The particular advantage of the compounds of the general formula (I) is that they are able to induce a high twisting power in the cholesteric phase, but without significantly affecting the magnitude of the spontaneous polarisation already present in the mixture in the smectic C phase. They are therefore suitable for pitch compensation, in particular for ferroelectric liquid-crystal mixtures.

In this formula, the symbols A , A and A are aromatic or heteroaromatic moieties, such as 1,4-phenylene or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, which are linked via a single bond (where k and m = zero) or via functional groups M and M , such as CO-O or CH2-O; j, k, l, m and n are zero or 1 (j + l + n = 2 or 3). The radicals R , R and R are H or alkyl/alkenyl, R is alkyl/alkenyl or a substituent known from LC chemistry, such as an alpha -haloalkanoic acid radical. In addition, at least one of the units A , A and A must be heteroaromatic, G is alkylene or alkenylene.
