Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for detecting L-bit sync words occurring at N-bit intervals in PPM-encoded servo pattern read signals read from magnetic tape (3) in tape drives (1). A soft output detector (11) processes the PPM-encoded servo pattern read signal to produce a series of soft output samples corresponding to respective bits encoded in the servo pattern. A sync word detector (12) then produces block correlation values for respective positions of a sliding L-sample block in the soft output sample series. The block correlation values are produced by calculating, at each block position, bit correlation values indicating correlation between respective samples and corresponding bits of the sync word, and summing each bit correlation value minus a predetermined function of the corresponding sample value. The sync word detector (12) then detects a sync word at the block position with the maximum block correlation value in an (N+L-1)-sample sequence of the soft output sample series.

Abstract: A controller 100 controls the transport of a tape 208 within a tape transport system 200, the tape transport system 200 having a read/write head 203, inboard reel 207 and outboard reel 206. The control device is adapted to generate control signals 104, 105 to control the velocity of the outboard and inboard reels as a function of a primary velocity 101 of the tape at the head and a secondary velocity 102 of the tape at the inboard reel and/or a secondary velocity 112 of the tape at the outboard reel. The velocity of the supply reel may be controlled based on the primary velocity and the velocity of the take-up reel may be controlled based on the secondary velocity. The primary velocity may be measured at the head using servo track information SI. Hall sensors 201 and 202 can be arranged at the reels for measuring the secondary velocity and a further secondary velocity. Tension of the tape can also be controlled.

Abstract: A magnetic tape servo band comprises servo patterns organized in servo frames FR for determining positional information. The servo frames comprise a first burst A comprising at least two servo stripes 111 inclined at a first angle α followed by a second burst B comprising at least two servo stripes inclined at a second angle β with respect to a direction orthogonal to the longitudinal extension of the tape medium. The second angle being different to the first angle. At least one of the stripes of the first burst has a first magnetic polarity and at least one of the stripes of the second burst has a second magnetic polarity different from the first magnetic polarity. A servo write head has first and second ring structures with a gap in each ring structure where the magnetic flux is oriented in opposite direction across the gaps.

Abstract: A tape drive system 700 includes a magnetic head having a servo sensor 702 to read servo pulses from servo bursts of a servo track. The servo bursts representing an encoded data symbol. An analog-to-digital converter 704 provides a sequence of samples of the read back servo signal. A digital correlator 708 computes a correlation signal between the sequence and a reference waveform. A timing reference module 714 provides a reference timing model having interpolation instants to the digital correlator. A correlation interpolator 710 interpolates the correlation signal at the interpolation instants and computes a longitudinal position (LPOS) detection metric. An LPOS detector 712 decodes the encoded data symbol of the servo bursts using the computed LPOS detection metric and estimates a reliability of the decoded data symbol. The system may include a servo signal interpolator 706. The system provides a signal to distortion ratio of the LPOS metric which is similar in the tape velocity range of 1 m/s to 12 m/s.

Abstract: An alternative time interval is taken of a timing based servo band to determine lateral position of a servo read head. The servo band is arranged in a sequence bursts with non- parallel servo stripes in sequentially adjacent sub-frames of a linear tape. The timing intervals comprise at least a first time interval (A) between a first pair of non-parallel servo stripes of a sub-frame; and an alternative time interval (C) between a pair of non-parallel servo stripes intermediate the first time intervals (A), the alternative interval servo stripes of sequentially adjacent sub-frames comprising a second servo stripe of the first pair, and a first servo stripe of a sequentially succeeding first pair. Position signals are ratios involving the first and second time intervals.
