Abstract: The use of polymers (I) as biocides is new, where (I) comprises: (a) 0.1-100 mol. % vinylamine (VA) or ethyleneimine units; (b) 0-99.9 mol.% units derived from at least one monomer selected from N-vinylcarboxamides of formula CH2=CH-N(R1)-CO-R2 (II), vinyl formate, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl alcohol, (1-6C) alkyl-vinyl ethers, monoethylenically unsaturated 3-8C carboxylic acids, or their esters, nitriles, amides and anhydrides, N-vinylurea, N-vinylimidazoles and N-vinylimidazolines; and (c) 0-5 mol.% units derived from monomers with at least two ethylenically unsaturated double bonds. The sum of (a)-(c) is 100 mol.%. R1, R2 = H or 1-6C alkyl.

Abstract: A process for the production of stable water-in-oil emulsions of hydrolysed polymers of n-vinyl amide of formula (I) in which R, R1 = H or C1-C6 alkyl, by the polymerisation of compounds of formula (I) alone or mixed with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of polymerisation initiators and emulsifiers in the form of water-in-oil emulsions to form waterin-oil polymer emulsions followed by the hydrolysis of the polymers in the form of the water-in-oil polymer emulsions in the presence of acids or bases and 1 to 30 wt % in relation to the polymers of emulsifiers, in which the emulsifiers used are mixtures of (a) 5 to 95 wt % of a block or graft copolymer of the structure (A-B)m, (A)nB or (B)nA in which A is a hydrophobic homo or copolymer with a degree of polymerisation of at least 3, B is a hydrophilic homo or copolymer with a degree of polymerisation of at least 3, m >= 1 and n >= 2, and (b) 5 to 95 wt % of another water-in-oil emulsifier with a molar mass of under 1000 g/mol. The polymer emulsions thus obtained may be used as retention and flocculation agents in paper production, to purify waste water and sludges in purification plants, as a dispersant and protective colloid for drilling muds and as a cement additive.

Abstract: A process for producing long-shelf-life aqueous solutions of vinyl-amine-unit-containing polymers by the hydrolysis of N-vinyl-carbonamide-containing polymers with acids in an aqueous medium and removing the carboxylic acids separated from the polymers as esters from the aqueous polymer solution following hydrolysis and by the addition of at least stoichiometric quantities of at least one C1 to C6 alcohol and distilling the esters off from the reaction mixture. The invention also relates to the use of the long-shelf-life aqueous solutions of vinyl-amine-unit-containing polymers as dry and wet consolidating agents in paper manufacture.

Abstract: Insoluble, only slightly swellable polymers containing amino groups, which can be obtained from popcorn polymers containing units of the structure (I) where R and R1 are H or C1-C4-alkyl, by eliminating the group R-CO- from at least 2% of the incorporated units of the structure I, with the formation of units of the structure II (II), a process for the preparation of the amino-containing popcorn polymers by polymerizing N-vinylcarboxamides and, if desired, other monoethylenically unsaturated monomers copolymerizable therewith with from 0.1 to 10% by weight, based on the monomers used in the polymerization, of a compound containing at least two ethylenically unsaturated non-conjugated double bonds as crosslinking agent, with exclusion of oxygen and polymerization initiators, to form popcorn polymers, and elimination of formyl groups from at least 2% of the copolymerized N-vinylcarboxamides, and the use of the resulting insoluble, only slightly swellable polymers containing amino groups as ion exchangers or adsorber resins for metal ions are described.
