    Abstract: The invention relates to a method of performing handover in a mobile radio system. The mobile radio system performs quality measurements on signals transmitted (300) between a mobile terminal and predetermined radio base stations. Handover is performed (301, 302, 303) when some of the measured signal strengths exceeds the signal strength for the radio base station to which the mobile terminal for the moment is set up, added to a handover value. The handover value is dependent on measured signal strengths and neighbouring cell relation values. The neighbouring cell relation values depend on a probability for handover to be performed from one radio base station to another radio base station in the mobile radio system.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a device and a method for packet switching in a cellular radio communication system. Radio stations that have packets to transmit, transmit packets with a particular transmission probability (Si,n). The fraction of the transmitted packets that are received correctly by the receiving radio station, the so-called throughput fraction (ti,n), can be calculated. The transmission probability (Si,n) for a transmitting radio station is continuously updated according to a mapping function (f(a)) that depends on the value of the throughput fraction (ti,n). According to the invention a mapping function (f(a)), with a derivative with an absolute value less than one, is chosen (201). Starting values of the throughput fraction (ti,n) are generated (203) and these values are input to the mapping function. Updated values of the transmission probability (Si,n) are generated (204) by mapping function. The transmitting radio station transmits (205) packets according to the updated transmission probability, whereby a new value of the throughput fraction is generated (206). The method is repeated until the values of the throughput fraction are stable.

    Abstract: A radio communications unit that has a casing includes an antenna that is connected to a signal processing unit. A metal object is placed in the casing and connected to an impedance. The antenna receives a radio signal which has repeating fading moments where the signal strength C is exceedingly low. The signal processing unit includes a unit for controlling a switch and impedance unit. In their simplest form, these control devices are manual, although they may alternatively comprise devices that are integrated in the signal processing unit which controls the activation of the metal object and the impedance with control signals. When the antenna is situated in a fading minimum, the metal object is either connected to or disconnected from the impedance unit, resulting in new signal reflections that cause the fading minimum to be moved away from the antenna.

    Abstract: In a cellular communication system, a method and apparatus are provided for allocating a channel for use on a connection between a base station and a mobile station in a cell, without making measurements of downlink interference. Throughout the system, uplink and downlink power levels are regulated so that, within each cell, their sum changes by an amount whose magnitude is substantially equal to the magnitude of change in path gain between the mobile station and the base station in that cell, and which sum is opposite in sign to the amount of change in path gain. This power regulation scheme assures that there will be a strong correlation between system-wide measurements of uplink and downlink interferen ce. Therefore, with the power regulation scheme in place, each cell determines uplink carrier to interference (C/I) ratios for the free channels available for use in the cell and selects an acceptable free channel having a C/I value that is within a predetermined acceptable range. If uplink C/I on the acceptable free channel is greater than the uplink C/I value of a channel currently assigned to a connection, then an intra-cell handover is performed so that the connection will be reassigned to the acceptable free channel. This technique is useful for providing an adaptive channel allocation scheme to systems, such as analog cellular communications systems, in which downlink interference measurements cannot be made.

    Abstract: A method for allocating power and channels to connections in a multi-channel access based wireless communication system in which each connection is acting independently of the other. The quality of each channel of a connection is measured at successive time steps (n, n+1). The measurements from a previous time step (n) are used to allocate, in the following time step (n+1), an average power of all channels the connection uses as well as individual power settings in-between said channels. The average power is controlled using an outer fairness loop balancing the average channel power against average bit rate per channel. The individual power settings is controlled using an inner capacity loop allocating much power to good channels and restricted power to poor channels. Each loop has a respective target relation and the results of the loops are combined in order to determine transmission power in the next time step. The method is of distributed character and may execute on individual receiving nodes. Further, it may be applied in the up link or in the down link.
