    Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting a radio link (RL) failure for uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) in a long term evolution (LTE) wireless communication system including at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) and at least one evolved Node-B (eNodeB) are disclosed.     Abstract: A method for transmitting a packet from a transmitter to a receiver in a wireless communication system begins by building a packet by a transport format combination (TFC) selection process, and the packet is transmitted from the transmitter to the receiver. If the transmitter receives an indication that the packet was not successfully received at the receiver, the packet is retransmitted via a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) procedure. If the HARQ procedure did not successfully transmit the packet, then the packet is retransmitted via a retransmission management (RM) procedure. If the RM procedure did not successfully transmit the packet, then the packet is discarded by the transmitter.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for protecting high throughput (HT) stations (STAs) are disclosed. In one embodiment, a physical layer (PHY) legacy preamble transmitted by one STA is decoded by another STA that does not use a legacy preamble. In another embodiment, one STA is identified by another STA by using bits in the preamble of a packet to indicate which PHY type will be used in the remaining portion of the packet. In yet another embodiment, one STA sends ready-to-send (RTS)/clear-to-send (CTS) or CTS-to-self messages for reserving a medium in the presence of another STA of a different type than the one STA. In yet another embodiment, an access point (AP) transmits a beacon or an association message including a capability information element (IE) that indicates operation or support for a legacy preamble, HT STA preambles and a medium access control (MAC) packet transmission with HT protection mechanisms.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting a transport format combination (TFC) are disclosed. A TFC recovery and elimination unit generates an allowed transport format combination set (TFCS) subset by recovering supported TFCs and eliminating not supported TFCs based on allocated radio resources and parameters that are new. A multiplexing and transmission sequence number (TSN) setting unit generates a medium access control (MAC) protocol data unit (PDU) by multiplexing at least one higher layer PDU within a maximum supported MAC PDU size. A TFC selection and padding unit selects a TFC for the MAC PDU from the allowed TFCS subset and performs padding of the MAC PDU, if necessary, so that the MAC PDU fits into the selected TFC. For retransmission, a new allowed TFCS subset may be generated based on new radio resources and parameters and the MAC PDU may be fragmented.

    Abstract: The method involves sending a request frame to a responder by an initiator, and sending a response frame to the initiator without sending a separate acknowledgement (ACK) frame for acknowledging receipt of the request frame. The response frame is sent by the responder within a short inter-frame spacing (SIFS) from time that the responder receives the request frame, where the responder has a request identity number in the response frame.
