    Abstract: A wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU) communicates in a system which includes plural network protocols. The WTRU includes a circuit configured to make an initial communication request. A communication circuit establishes a communication link in response to the initial communication request in a first direction of communication and a second direction of communication. Circuitry determines a protocol preference for the first direction of communication and to establish communication in the first direction according to the protocol preference separately from communication in the second direction of communication. Circuitry determines a protocol preference for the second direction of communication and to establish communication in the second direction according to the protocol preference separately from communication in the first direction of communication. A circuit determines the availability of communication services optimal for communicating the user data in a different protocol from the protocol used as the communication link.

    Abstract: Implementation of communication in a multi-protocol wireless network communication network is performed according to protocols independently selected for forward and reverse communication links. A communication request is made according to predetermined criteria, and a communication link is established responsive to the request. A determination is made of a preferred communication protocol in at least one direction (forward or reverse link). The communication link is established for that direction in accordance with the preferred communication protocol while controlling communication in the other direction independently.

    Abstract: An apparatus for code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless communication comprising a receiver configured to receive a CDMA signal that includes a desired traffic signal and a second signal, the desired traffic signal being spread with a desired traffic spreading code and the second signal being spread with a second spreading code; means for generating a second signal cancellation component including means for generating a second signal strength by despreading the CDMA signal based on the second spreading code; means for generating a second signal cancellation factor by selectively combining the second signal spreading code and the desired traffic spreading code; and means for combining the second signal strength and the second signal cancellation factor to generate the second signal cancellation component; means for generating a despread desired traffic signal by despreading the CDMA signal based on the desired traffic spreading code; and means for combining the despread desired traffic signal and the second signal cancellation component to cancel second signal noise from the despread desired traffic signal.

    Abstract: Un método para recibir una señal transmitida mediante una unidad de comunicación, en un sistema de comunicación de CDMA, en el que la señal transmitida incluye una pluralidad de códigos cortos, siendo un código corto él que tiene una longitud más corta que el código de dispersión utilizado para discriminar comunicaciones individuales, y la unidad de comunicación transmite repetitivamente al menos un código corto que es actualizado periódicamente, cuyo método se caracteriza por las operaciones de: a. obtener una estimación de una función de distribución de probabilidad, PDF, del ruido de fondo (418) con el uso del mismo código corto actualizado periódicamente que es transmitido por la unidad de comunicación; b. utilizar dicha estimación de la PDF del ruido de fondo (416) para ajustar la relación de posibilidad de acuerdo con la señal transmitida: c. comparar dicha relación de posibilidad con un umbral predeterminado (416), para determinar si dicha relación de posibilidad excede al umbral predeterminado; d. repetir las operaciones a - c hasta que dicha relación de posibilidad exceda a dicho umbral predeterminado.

    Abstract: A User Equipment (UE) receives and samples communication signals, where the communication signals have a time frame format, a transmission chip rate and a synchronization code associated with a time slot that includes a midamble that indicates a modulation of the synchronization code where a specified modulation of received synchronization codes identifies the timing for a timeslot in which data is to be received. The UE preferably includes a synchronization code determination circuit, a midamble determination circuit, and a phase modulation sequence detection circuit operatively associated with the midamble determination circuit. The UE can be configured for use with the low chip rate option of the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) standards that employ a predefined set of downlink SYNC codes that point to midambles which indicate SYNC code modulation sequence to enable reading of data in a subsequent Broadcast Channel (BCH) message.
