    Abstract: PURPOSE: A water-soluble cationized chitin suitable for use in cosmetics, perfumes, toiletries, etc., prepared by replacing the reactive hydrogen atoms of chitin by quat. nitrogen-containing groups and cleaving its intermolecular hydrogen bonds.
    CONSTITUTION: A cationized chitin prepared by replacing the reactive hydrogen atoms in a chitin molecule by quat. nitrogen-containing groups represented by formula I (wherein R is methyl or ethyl and X is a halogen) and cleaving the intermolecular hydrogen bonds. Said modified chitin is produced by reacting 100pts.wt. chitin with at least about 30pts.wt. cationizing agent [e.g., a compound of formula II or III (glycidyltrialkylammonium or 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl- trialkylammonium salt)] in the presence of an alkali in an aqueous solvent (water and/or an alcohol), neutralizing and washing the product and dissolving it in, e.g., an aqueous chloride solution (≥about 1N) to cleave the intermolecular hydrogen bonds.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To prepare the titled composition giving the hair with excellent touch and having high wave-retainability, by adding hydrolyzed keratin and a cationic surfaceactive agent to a first cold-wave lotion containing a reducing substance as a subst-rate. CONSTITUTION:The titled composition is prepared by mixing a first cold-wave lotion containing a reducing substance as a substrate, with (A) hydrolyzed keratin (1-20wt%, pref. 2-5wt%) and (B) a cationic surface-active agent (0.5- 5wt%). The component (A) is pref. the one having a molecular weight of 200- 5,000 (esp. about 1,000) and obtained by hydrolyzing a keratinous material with an acid, an alkali or an enzyme; and above all, the enzymatic hydrolyzate is suitable for the application to cosmetics. The representative examples of the component (B) are the complunds of formula (one or two of R1-R4 are 8-20C alkyl, etc. and the others are 1-3C alkyl, etc.), etc.

    Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain the titled keratin readily soluble in water and aqueous solvents, by readucing a Keratinous substance to cleave sulfhydryl groups, and reacting a cationic agent having a quaternary nitrogen atom and an epoxy group with the reduction product.
    CONSTITUTION: A keratinous substance, e.g. wool, feather, hair or nail, is reduced with a reducing agent, e.g. 2-mercaptoethanol, in water or its mixture with an organic solvent, e.g. methanol, acetone or dioxane, to convert disulfide bonds into sulfhydryl bonds. The resultant product is then reacted with a cationic agent, e.g. glycidyltrimethylammonium chloride, having a group of formula I, II or III and a quaternary nitrogen atom in one molecule to give the aimed modified keratinous protein. Perferably, the reducing reaction is carried out at pH 6W11 and if necessary under heating for 2W3hr.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the subject highly absorbing and oil-absorbing fine particles by dispersing a monomer mixture containing a hydrophilic monomer containing polyethylene glycol mono(meth)acrylate and crosslinkable monomer in an aqueous medium in the presence of an oil-soluble substance and polymerizing the monomer mixture. The toner obtd. in such a manner is the so-called unshaped toner having the undulations as if the surfaces are depressed and, therefore, the toner has the excellent cleanability. Since the toner has no sharply pointed parts as with the toner obtd. by a grinding method, the generation of the fine powder by friction with a carrier, etc., is obviated and the excellent printing resistance is obtd.
