Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain carbon fiber excellent in adhesiveness to a matrix resin such as phenol resin or epoxy resin and flexural characteristic and compression characteristic obtained when molded into a composite material by coating the surface of carbon fiber with a specific polymer. SOLUTION: The surface of carbon fiber is coated with 0.01-5 wt.% (based on carbon fiber) polymer, which is substantially insoluble in a solvent in which phenol resin or epoxy resin is dissolved, obtained by polymerizing either one monomer of a monomer having both of a polar group such as amide group, imide group or urethane group and a reactive functional group reacting with phenol resin or epoxy resin, e.g. hydroxybenzyl group or hydroxyphenoxy group and a monomer containing a monomer having the above polar group and a monomer having the above reactive functional group in an amount of 70-100 wt.% based on total monomer to provide the objective carbon fiber having 0.02-0.3 surface oxygen concentration O/C (X ray electron spectroscopy) and 0.2-3% surface carboxyl group concentration, COOH/C (chemically modified X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy).

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a carbon fiber-reinforced resin composite material which is excellent in impact resistance characteristic by reinforcing the composite material with carbon fiber wherein specific gravity is a specific value or lower, tensil elastic modulus is a specific value or higher, tensil strength is a specific value or higher, and peel strength at end of plate is a specific value or higher. CONSTITUTION:For carbon fiber composing carbon fiber reinforced resin composite material or prepreg, specific gravity is 1.75 or lower, tensile elastic modulus and tensile strength which are measured by a strand tensile test are respectively 29tf/mm or higher and 500kgf/mm , and peel strength at end of plate measured by a composite test is 22kgf/mm or higher. For carbon fiber of which specific gravity is larger than 1.75, neight reducing effect is small. Further for carbon fiber wherein tensile elastic modulus is under 29tf/mm , and tensile strength is under 500kg/mm , impact resistance is low, and besides thick composite material is necessarily produced in order to develop a specific characteristic. Then, merits by the weight-reduction are decreased. Further, when peel strength at end of plate is under 22kgf/mm , the maximum load is decreased because of ply separation at impact.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the tensile strength of a carbon fiber containing fine particles for improving the performance of the fiber or imparting additional function to the fiber. CONSTITUTION:The objective carbon fiber contains fine particles exclusively in the inner layer of single fiber. The fine particle-containing carbon fiber has high tensile strength and is hardly producible by conventional process. The fiber has high tensile strength as well as improved performance or imparted additional function by the mixing of fine particles. Since the carbon fiber has high tensile strength and excellent elastic modulus, compressive strength, electrical conductivity, electric wave shielding property or heat-resistance, it is useful as a reinforcing fiber for a composite material containing thermosetting resin, thermoplastic resin, ceramic, metal, etc., as a matrix, concretely, aircraft such as supersonic flying object, space articles such as rocket and truss, sports goods such as fishing rod and golf shaft, electric wave shielding material and heat- resistant member.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To produce graphite fiber in high production efficiency by introducing an inert gas into a space between a heating member made of graphite and a furnace shell enclosing the heating member in closed state interposing a space, continuously introducing a fiber into the heating member while applying a pressure of the gas to the outer circumference of the heating member and delivering the produced graphite fiber from the heating member. CONSTITUTION:The heating furnace to be used in the present process is provided with a cylindrical heating member 1 made of graphite and a furnace shell 4 enclosing the heating member 1 in closed state interposing a space. Both openings of the heating member 1 are closed with sealing materials 8 each having a through-hole 9 nearly at the center of the sealing material. A thread T is continuously introduced through the hole 9 into the heating member 1, an inert gas G is introduced through an inlet nozzle into the space between the heating member 1 and the furnace shell 4, the thread T is heated and graphitized under application of a pressure of the inert gas to the outer circumference of the heating member 1 and the produced graphite fiber is delivered through the hole 9 of the other side. A graphite fiber can be produced in high apparatus efficiency by this process.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain carbon fiber for super high-strength composite material having low resin dependence by flameproofing and carbonizing acrylic yarn to give specific raw material carbon fiber and electrochemically oxidizing and inactivating the raw material carbon fiber. CONSTITUTION:Acrylic fiber having 5-42 difference in lightness of iodine adsorp tion is flameproofed in an oxidizing atmosphere, carbonized at 300-700 deg.C and 1,000-1,200 deg.C at =400kg/mm average single yarn strength. Then the carbon fiber is used as an anode, electrochemically treated an electro lytic solution containing 50-600 coulomb electrical quantity per gram fiber maintained at 40-120 deg.C, washed with water and dried. Further the fiber is inacti vated at 600-1,000 deg.C, heated and inactivated in a reducing atmosphere to give carbon fiber having 480kg/mm average single yarn strength and >=600kg/mm resin impregnated strand strength in all different resin treatments.
