Abstract: The present invention relates to a system for recognizing an approaching object for a moving vehicle to accurately estimate a FOE location and to detect the local motion of an object although a vehicle is turning. The system for recognizing an object approaching a vehicle by analyzing an image signal taken by a camera comprises: an image processing unit for outputting digital image information by processing the taken image; a vehicle rotating angle calculation unit for calculating a vehicle rotating angle based on image information outputted by the image processing unit, a vehicle speed, and steering angle information; an image derotation unit for performing the derotation of each component according the rotation of the vehicle from a scene taken at a first point (t-1) and an scene taken at a second point (t) based on the vehicle rotating angle calculated by the vehicle rotating angle calculation unit; a valid feature point detection unit for selecting valid feature points by removing motion components created by the rotation of the vehicle based on the derotation result by the deroation unit; an FOE estimation and object recognition unit for estimating the focus of expansion (FOE) by the intersection of the extended vectors based on the result outputted by the valid feature point detection unit, and extracting feature points against global motion as feature points having local motion based on the FOE, and recognizing an object approaching the vehicle by clustering the extracted feature points having local motion; and an alarm outputting unit for notifying a driver of the recognized result by voice or image.
